titcr. his breakdown should be

1. take LSAT

2. if >170, apply to LS

3. if get into T6/T14 with scholly, and not on solid career track, attend

all of these can be done with minimal extra effort and there's no obligation until the last step

its a somewhat crappy job that pays you more than you would make doing most other

the prototypical LS grad is a poli sci major who would have gone nowhere in life if not for LS. he was relatively smart so got into biglaw and was paid way more than he was worth. since he had absolutely zero experience, he was being paid big money to be 1. available and 2. focus on nitty gritty details no one else cares about

in this job, even though the biglawyer has no relevant experience, he ends up working for and being surrounded by much richer people, and being billed out for stupid amounts of money. so after a while he begins to think he's 'worth' that money and should be as rich as clients/partners. after all, he works harder! pays attention to all the little detaisl they ignore! look how much he brings in for the firm! so there is a lot of disatisfaction with grinding 50-60+ hours a week and being on call nights and weekends when you see people who are making alot more money but seem to be working less. after all, you take care of the important stuff! the bringdowns and closings and checklists! you are contributing to the global song of capitalism! you should be rewarded as such

people who have worked real jobs and real corporate jobs in the past understand the tradeoffs - the job has its shitty parts (aspie lawyers, on call, weekends/vacations ruined). in exchange, it pays you 2-3x what you would earn on the strenght of your poli sci degree and zero work experience

ive worked 9-5 (more like 10-4) corporate jobs making anywhere from 30k-150k, worked 2200 hours/year biglaw making 160-300k, and 9-5 in house making an similar amount. it's all in your perspective

right, which is why you dont make biglaw the end goal. the end goal is to get 9-5 300k in house where you dont work nights and weekends

i remmber poasting on this bort several years ago complaining about my financial situation compared to a friend in IT. at the time i was massively in debt, making 160k starting, and my friend had grinded through the IT ranks while i was in law school, making 70, 80, 90, 110k, etc. he was making something like 120k at the time, no debt, lots of savings. i was at 160k, -150k debt. someone point out that i was just starting out my career and i would easily outpace him in the long run. today our net worths are probably similar (his is prob a bit higher), but i make double what he does, and that'll continue for the forseable future. i work slightly more but his job is starting to get shitty too.

If you get a 170+, it may be worth it. Apparently law school admissions are not anywhere near as competitive as when I applied (2003-2004) and bigfirms need bodies. If you go to t6 school, I'd say you have a good shot (like 75%) at getting to a point where you're never paid less than $200k/year. I think back to my classmates and almost 10 years out, I bet the median income is something like $250k range. I know what maybe 75% of my classmates are doing so I'll just assume the rest are total losers. I'm also not counting the people who are now SAHPs or left law to a clearly less lucrative profession like artist or writer or something by choice. Anyway, the odds are good.

Just make sure you don't do litigation.

99% of jobs are boring, mind numbing work, particularly those available to your average poli sci shithead. The difference is that there is no chance for advancement at your average job but if you grind away 3-5 years in biglaw, you can get a nice salary and trade in the bad lifestyle for a decent in-house one. those years in biglaw may be a grind but I think it's a sacrifice worth making as long as you have an exit plan and work toward it from day1.

Big lawyers make a shit ton more than your average cpa or programmer. I work at a place with a bunch of CFAs and their lives are way more stressful than mine assuming you're talking about investment professionals. Those people generally went banking to hf/pe route. They make more money than big lawyers though. That's a trade off you make...more money for more stress. The point is that this stress can be a temporary sacrifice you make as long as you develop a plan to get out eventually, but once you get out, you can still make great money even if it isn't biglaw money. Your average programmer or cpa can't do the same.

CR the average CPA or programmer would have to grind out a pretty mediocre career and get lucky a few times in order to get on a 250k 9-5. also their 250k 9-5 will be director of XXXX and will be much more stressful than an inhouse jerb

Lol the programmers I know started at like $50-60k. I don't mind know any CPAs other than the controller and the CFO at my company but those people have unicorn jobs in a sea of faceless CPAs. Even a programmer friend at Google who has a masters started around $80k. I don't know what crack you're smoking thinking your average programmer is getting equity at startups, most of which arent going to not succeed anyway. Also, all this is moot anyway since peterman is not a programmer or accountant and isn't going back to college anyway. My advice is also based on scoring over a 170 on the lsat.

Is this normal?

This brings back memories. When I was a second year, we had a case with a 100+ page privilege log, and I was the junior associate assigned with proofing and cross-checking it. I was also the only associate on a case pending before the Tenth Circuit, and I drafted the briefs (in retrospect, they were crazy not to get someone more senior in there). We had close family friends with a have-to-attend wedding in London the week the privilege log was due (I gave three months notice that I needed to be gone), and the week before the COA brief was. I pulled two consecutive all-nighters on the privilege log before leaving. I fell asleep in the cab on the way to the airport. I fell asleep on the runway, with a hard copy of the brief in my lap. I woke up when my spouse told me I had to get off the plane in London. We had lunch, and then s/he took a nap to fight off the jet lag. I worked. I woke up at 5:00 AM the first morning there to work. I intended to wake up the next morning to work but overslept. We went to the wedding, and left at midnight after the reception for the airport. We found a corner in Heathrow to camp out, and then my spouse slept on the floor while I worked until our 6:00 AM flight. I worked on the plane until I passed out. My spouse complained about that trip for approximately three years.

The punchline is that this all didn't prevent me from getting yelled at for leaving the privilege log in less-than-polished shape, and yelled at again for having a few embarrassing typos in the brief. (Though the latter was almost entirely local counsel's fault, and we got the COA to reverse, so all's well that ends well.)
