Really in modern society you have two groups of people. You have normal people who can make an actual life for themselves and go with the natural things that have made humans happy for tens of thousands of years: family, community, etc.--pursuits and relationships outside the self.

I agree that community is important and part of the loneliness of living in a large and unfamiliar city is due to the fact that you may not have a ready-made community there. But you can BUILD a community through venues like church, shared interest groups, alumni groups, friends of friends.

Alternatively, I know many people who don't relate at all to where they grew up and have no real roots there: it's just where they spent part of their childhood.
