You sometimes see this in athletics. Guys stay at the top for a while because they're chasing something, but as soon as they get it it's like they relax a bit and start to fade away.

Clearly the last few years RG was the goal for Djoker. Now that he has a COUPE, I wonder if he doesn't come back to the pack a bit.

--------------------------------------------------

I'm also curious to see whether he recognizes his own mortality in tennis and starts to just focus on the big events. I'm interested to see how he handles Shanghai and Paris, which a lot of the other big guns tend to eschew.

good poast. definitely valid questions.

big issue is whether he's injured in any way. it's not clear what's going on and he's been secretive about his injuries all summer.

just because he's on a post-RG hangover doesnt mean he cant turn it around and play for 14 (lance) or 17 (fed) still. it's not like he has literally nothing to play for and is gonna get bored.

but i do wonder if hes gonna get bored of sweeping iw/miami and racking up masters. he's never gonna have seasons as good as 2011 and 2015, so why strive so much?

does he even need to be #1? he can win slams from the #2 position. nobody is gonna enter the top 2. stan is too inconsistent. everyone else is light years away.

I agree with all of that.

If I'm advising him, I do think it's time for him to take his foot of the gas a bit at the non-majors.

I also agree with what you say re: #1. Though part of me wonders if Djokovic is a guy who needs to be playing all the time to be in rhythm and at his best.

yeah, either he needs to be playing and all the time to be in rhythm... or needs to be winning all the time to have the confidence and have the rest of the tour fear you. or some of both.

fed knew the field would fear the shit out of him at a us open whether he won cincy/canada or not. djoker i think wants to go into every slam on a huge streak to show he's inevitable. it's a little like hitlery -- djoker thrives on his inevitability.

btw, when did the djoker fade really start?

wimby loss to queery isn't a fade. all good runs have to end somewhere, he still won canada that summer, still lost to BSC stan in the USO final (i cant my toe)

he kinda unraveled post USO with murrafag's bullshit run to #1. maybe it was the pressure of murrayfag chasing him and realizing he's not invincible that led to his real collapse?

i think RG was his ultimate goal, because it's the key to the greatness kingdom in tennis, and it was BY FAR the biggest item missing from his resume. once he won it, it was natural to have a let down and to not be as focused.

but he badly wanted the Olympics to achieve the Career Golden Slam, so when JMDP beat him it took away the one item on his resume that he had left to win, and that coupled with the lack of desire from winning RG lowered his level. even at the USO his level was way, way down. he basically lucked himself into that final. then he had a lot of bad losses in the post-USO stretch culminating in unthinkably losing the YE #1 to Murray. by the time he lost to Istomin in Oz he was shell-shocked.
