We are not in any situation where the labor supply is strained at any level, if anything, we are glutted with labor which creates a downward pressure on real wages which in turn creates a race to the bottom for wages and quality of life for those already here. and that race to the bottom disproportionately effects recent immigrants, black & brown americans, and lower class whites. You insist on framing this as an anti-immigrant framework. It is not that at all. One can analyze this from a purely american/"who is currently here" framework (which already includes its immigrants as beneficiaries) and come to differing conclusions, of course, but it is not one that reaches the fundamental question of why would need new people of any stripe to revitalize a place. that argument eschews both people who are already there struggling and those who would love to fix a place with help. HYPO: you start a homestead program to any american resident (a huge number if you include undocumented people) for the city of detroit (or any place in america in need of revitalization). the homestead includes relocation (the biggest issue for most poor people) and capital investment, who wouldn't people take up that offer? If no, then yes, import people for that purpose. if yes, then there is no need for mass importation. the importation argument jumps to answer C when options A and B are readily available. Now, in the hypo, if the answer is "no", then answer C is appropriate. But that's not the crux of it. No revitalization has been tried. They (both sides) have decided on letting it die. and to go directly to C is to give up on people already there. imagine being from detroit and hearing a former president say that. that's tantamount to saying "oh, we've given up on those people." what happened to humanitarianism for our own people?

i want to add a point beyond immigration and that is one of culture. we have become increasingly fragile w/r/t speech. if something offends, then the person saying it must not only be condemned, but punished. in my mind, dangerous speech is important even if it is just a litmus test for who are our debased. it's better to know what they think then have them cower in the corners of speech zones. limiting free speech and the attendant reality of free speech--that people will be offended--has the effect of stifling dissent, lowering innovation, and entertaining nonsense. ie--my name is desire, i was born male, have a beard and a cock, but you MUST entertain my mental illness. trump's lack of polish is good to knock down that sacred cow.

one last thing w/r/t to race. IME, nearly every single well meaning "program" created by white liberals has only continued to disable people of color and created or sustained dependency. i am, in a sense, a jim brown/ali/farrahkhan conservative. Sustained dependency sounds inherently bad but instead of thinking of it as an unintended result consider what other choice is there? The bedrock of middle class black America is affirmative action in government. That creates dependency with no end, but what else do you propose? Rescind affirmative action and let the black middle class crumble? There is no alternative to continued dependency and seeing that balance continue is healthy for race relations and the fabric of American society.
