Swing state local networks also jack up their prices during elections. It possible that national buys might be more cost effective.
Also a possibility other candidates, both Hillary and down ballot, have bought up a lot of swing state local ad time and at this point national is his only real option.

Turns out Trump's strategy is actually LESS efficient:
Booking ads at the last minute, as Trump’s campaign has been doing, sometimes means spending more money for the same spot as a campaign that makes its reservations earlier. And there are some signs that some of the late decision-making is driven by the candidate: The New York Times reported earlier this month that Trump himself has been selecting the media markets in which the campaign has been advertising.

this. People really seem to tune them out so far. Perhaps as we get closer but it all does seem to be a massive waste of money.
Clinton would be better off copying Trump going on the morning shows, phone ins, sit downs with Maddow/Hayes or whatever.
I think Trump has invented the new way of running for POTUS.

She needs to just keep running negative ads against trump in swing states to keep Trump's favorables down among independents.

He's basically putting all his eggs in the basket of a national wave of anti-establishment fervor and terrorism fears. Basically he's going on all in on an October surprise that shifts all the momentum in his favor, including two of PA/NC/VA/FL
Anything short of that, Clintons advantage in voter registration, GOTV efforts, local market ad buys, state by state organization, etc. will crush in crucial swing states. He can't beat her at local politics (just as he couldn't beat Ted in the same game) so it's basically go big or go home in the debates.
