but remember that interest on student loans starts accruing after 1L. so, after 1L, you have $83K of outstanding student loans, at a weighted average interest rate of 7.5%, and year two you have $166K, so by the time you graduate you already have around $40K of accrued interest.

Date: October 24th, 2016 4:41 PM Author: mahogany sweet tailpipe yes, but starting in 2012 all graduate student direct loans are 100% unsubsidized. before 2012, used to be something like $6,500 were subsidized, the rest unsubsidized at a lower interest rate (6.8%) up to $20.5K, the remainder GradPLUS at 7.9%. on the subsidized portion they paid the interest while you were in school. $6.5K out of $83K is pretty insignificant though, and any way, it's irrelevant now. Date: October 24th, 2016 4:52 PM Author: mahogany sweet tailpipe so you graduate with $290K at 7.5%. that means your interest payments alone each year are about $19K. no student loan interest deduction and those are paid with after-tax money. so just to break even on the interest payments, going to law school needs to increase your earning potential by at least $30K. if you ever want to pay it off, you need to make at least $50K above what you would make without a law degree, and it'll still take 30 years.
for it to make financial sense, law school needs to realistically add at least $100K to your yearly earning potential. even then, in biglaw, you have at least 6 years if you live like a miser of simply paying your debt off, otherwise living the same as if you made $45K per year. longer in higher COL areas. 10 years if you live somewhat normally, but don't buy a house or start a family. longer if you want to do either of those things. |
