Seems like a tough balance. Know any bro doing this? What's it like time commitment wise? Any 'lay prestige' from lawyers/clients/etc.?

Yeah have a close friend doing this. He has immunity from firing from his biglaw firm and has coasted for years. Non-JAG reserve.

yeah, i'm wondering about this too. maybe i should just apply while i'm in school instead of waiting til i start biglaw.

are u interested as well? would love to serve even part-time but can't afford to get fired or shit like that from firm job until my $$$loans are paid off.

nice man. having a job that pays & doing school part-time (which sounds exactly what ur doing) is the way to go. at least u won't have to worry about $$$loans.

Put it on resume. It will help at some firms and help distinguish you from the herd. It will hurt at some firms but you don't want to work at those firms anyways.

He was seconded during his first year and started during that. Currently like a 4th? Billing under expectations, nonissues

was this in flyover or NY/DC/etc.? not sure if liberalness of the firm/office makes a difference.

also, how does your friend like the reserve gig? i'm assuming it can be a hassle at times?

not flame in a lot of states u can do national guard officer track & do your monthly duty at the State U's football games holding flags or whatever. sometimes u can even walk out on the field & accept prizes. crazy that more biglawyers don't do this more often.

I can confirm that this is 100% not flame. Buddy of mine does this. He just walks out on the football field and accepts prizes. Gets a ton of cheers and then goes back to his big law job.

I did his for several years (not JAG though). The firm was always cool about it and coworkers and clients liked it. But it was often a pain at drill because things would come up. The more senior you are at the firm the more of an issue it is. If you are a first year other folks at the firm can just leave you alone. But if you have your own cases those cases won't stop just because you're at drill or AT. I drafted many pleadings from humvees, range towers, etc. And when I was at work at the firm I'd always get calls from my unit or battalion commander (especially when I was a company commander) about random bullshit. I eventually just stopped checking my AKO email between drills and refused to respond to anything except urgent matters.

lol, nice. i'll probably be in diff. shoes since i'll likely be tranasactional not lit. heard scheduling for transactional might be worse. i'm thinking about copping reserve/guard on the side b/c 1) would love to serve part-time at least (feel like i already missed active duty boat w/ all the stupid loans under my name) + 2) my end goal is bigfed down the line so it might be a good way to show my interest in public service.
