hibiki 21 yo is great, and you're right below about the shame of it being discontinued. the japanese weren't prepared for the skyrocketing demand of recent years, which means the older stocks are all but tapped. everything is going no age statement to mask how young it's getting

I was just kidding, although JW Blue is overpriced and unspectacular (this isn't just an anti-blend thing, I actually think the JW green is superior), while Macallan is sort of a weird single malt that I keep a bottle of but that tastes really sherry to me.

I'm an Islay man myself: Arbeg 10 is the best for the $$, lagavulin really is a great product despite the weird hype it's been getting in recent years (if you want to be a contrarian then just get the cask-strength 12 rather than the 16), and Bunnahabhain is one you don't hear shit about ever, but is excellent.

Costco's kirkland brand 12 year scotch for $25 for 1.75 liters is not terrible actually.

The worst scotch I ever had from costco as well was this: https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/haig/haig-club-whisky/

It fucking tasted like rubbing alcohol run through dirty leaves a few times.

along with bunnahabhain, it's the most underrated islay out there. caol ila is both the perfect introduction to peated whisky for someone who is reluctant to try it and has some very well respected higher range offerings for the snobs. great distillery.
