Basically bought a few of the major brands like GE, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, Kenmore (mostly same as other makes) filters and shipped them off to a Chinese injection molding plant. There are only like 5-6 unique shapes.

The legitimate OEM filters are $50+ each and dumb boomers buy them every year thinking it helps their water taste good. They're nothing but a basic charcoal filter wrapped in a proprietary package.

Chinese plant builds them for $1 a piece. Buddy resells them under a bunch of fridge part numbers for $25 each on Amazon. He creates a dozen different "brands" all selling the same knock-off filter to bully competitors out of search listings or just confuse boomers who see bad reviews for one of his brands. No scamming here bc the filters work as well as the real brand and all say "guaranteed compatible with manufacturer's part xyz" in the listing.

Shrewd?

Sure it is. Everything gets audited by an outside testing lab so he can stamp that on the package/ad. This costs very little and he has enough (cheap) inventory on hand to do a random audit before selling any from one batch.

That liability would be my biggest worry if I were him.

First year made $100k after capital outlay to get inventory built up and work through teething pains with the injection molding company (fucking level of Engrish there is unreal). This year $300k. Next year he's expanding into other markets like home heater dust/pollen filters.

Seems smart as fuck to be honest. He segments his market too. Created a "premium" line that he sent out to various mommy bloggers plus tons of 5-star reviews that sell for a $10 discount under the OEM part for people who need confidence that it's legit. Then he has a bargain basement line where he doesn't even put a nice label on or write any ad copy.

Shrewd but plenty of opportunities for this to fall apart so he needs a back up plan. But for the time being, very shrewd.

I think for a guy like this, he will always find another little niche to exploit. Yeah he may get crushed eventually but this is a guy who went to a TTT college clearing more than senior associates in his late 20s. If he fails, he has a nice cushion to try again. No wife and no kids either.

Like who the fuck thinks of refrigerator water filters? Honestly 99% of small business guys I've met do something similarly boring and unglamorous. One guy I know made millions painting office bathroom stalls with some special equipment. Sign a few contracts with local universities and office towers and you're set. Anyway you can maek it.

I may title it simply: Thanksgiving.

Get that thing on all the airport Hudson News stands for November. Malcolm Gladwell wouldn't know what hit him. MBAs would be amped up and networking the fuck outa their Old Aunt Millie trying to get a lead on the latest boomer products.

why would they? even if this happened and the odds are tiny they would blame the local water supply or old lead pipes.

charcoal filters aren't exactly rocket science. chinese would lose money putting expensive lead in there.

i hope he has a tight LLC setup to protect himself from personal liability. the reason GE, 3M price their products so high is to account for all the lawsuits, contingencies etc

So he better hope that he is lucky wrt lawsuits. if you are importing shit from china as a one man operation avoid anything that deals with purification, health etc.
