Epic show. Really well done. Up there with the GOAT serial dramas ever. I feel some kind of cultural accomplishment having consumed the entire thing. After what I thought were a fairly slow first couple seasons, the show grew into something that kept you glued.

Some thoughts:

(1) having binge watched the series, a ton of scenes are dedicated to either eating, dudes hugging and kissing each other, or scenes in hospitals. Just a observation.

(2) AJ is the most bitchass, whiny, insufferable character in the history of television. He simply had no redeeming qualities. He spent nearly every scene he was in over an eight year period acting like a bitch, pussy, or spoiled shit head. I was hoping for death during his botched suicide. Even his suicide attempt was annoying.

(3) by the end I found myself hardly rooting for any of the main characters any more. Tony had done so much awful shit that he was nearly impossible to like. At least for me. Chris the same way. The minute you'd start to root for these guys they do something despicable.

(4) for reason (3), I think Artie Bucco was probably my favorite character on the show. He was likeable as hell as the good hearted underdog always getting his balls busted. I found huge satisfaction when he popped one of Tony's guys stealing from him. Go Artie.

(5) the way Chris treated Adriana throughout the entire show was fucking

despicable. Her demise was sad as fuck.

(6) the Vito fag subplot was cr and it was sad seeing him get got even though you knew it was coming. Should have just stayed with Johnny cakes.

Will add if I think of anything else

I did this too. I ended up thinking that it was kind of disjointed. It seemed that way when I saw it on TV, but I thought that was because I was missing entire seasons plus random episodes. The mob-type plots are always happening and there's not much exposition there. The family drama is always in the foreground, but IRL, a guy like Tony would just be absorbed in his work and whores and not gaf, plus he'd have more than just the one or two whores. Tony puts too much effort into being a 'good' father, and it causes drama because everyone hates him. Like, my father never took any of us to see a university, and he ignores me when I talk and shit. Like if he thought I used the computer too much or that I sucked, he would just insult various things about me, he wouldn't actually think about my best interests. There are millions of dads in America who make Tony seem enlightened and yuppieish.

I figure with AJ, they just wrote the character around the actor's phenotype. He went from fat kid to weak adult. If he were less dopey looking, maybe they'd make him an Engineer and he'd devise ingenious ways for Tony to get out of trouble. I don't see why they made him so useless. Just give him less screen time. I also wondered why Junior faded into the background, the conflict between he and Tony was like, the most interesting arc in the early seasons.

Agreed on AJ. His screen time was a beating. It almost makes me think I'm overlooking something more esoteric. Like maybe the writers were trying to portray AJ as a manifestation of Tony's insecurities or something deep

If they cast a fat kid who grew into Jerry O'Connell though, they'd write him differently and have him getting into trouble like Jackie Jr., or getting laid or playing football. They just write the character around the phenotype. This explains why Meadow was made to do no wrong, ever, she was to hot.

I might get stomped but i also felt like many of the scenes with Tony's psychiatrist were boring filler

Amazed Lorraine Bracco is the second billed actor on the show

Her 'treatment' seemed to accomplish nothing. This is verified at the end when she finally fired him as a patient

I skimmed a couple of message boards and the dudebros are like, "I totally fast forward the Melfi scenes!" and they get 300 upvotes. I never thought they were boring filler. They tell you what Tony's thinking... gives you some exposition that isn't in the form of another argument of some kind.

She's prominent in the pilot and early on, hence being billed second.

I am Jewish btw.

what i always thought was interesting about it was how unglamorous and shitty it made day to day mob life look. like there's a whole running gag about how ridiculous the old-school trappings of the mob are when in reality its being run like any other modern american company; leotardo being pissed about the nj crew's slipshod initiation rituals, guys always complaining about someone bending 'the rules', johnny sack demanding that he be allowed to whack ralphie as a 'matter of honor', all the romantic sicilian-bandit stuff, contrasted with the scenes where tony has all his middle managers in a room and he's yelling at them for not making their numbers that quarter.

nine times out of ten everyone is hanging out in dirty basements or grimy clubs and they all live in sparsely decorated mcmansions or shitty apartments.

and i also always wondered what the subtext was of having like all the guys from the generation above tony die of cancer
