Secretary uses every last one of her 10 sick days every year. Normal?

Is this the norm for people like secretaries and service workers?
Meanwhile, I haven't been too sick to come to the office in years. |

actually no.
the reason your differentiate sick days instead of general PTO is that you HAVE to pay your employees for accrued PTO either at the end of the year, when they cash it in, or when they quit.
By making the sick time distinction you cheap cunts don't have to pay them for it or let it accrue.
So yes you are asking for it. |

But 10 sick days is a lot. I bet if you made it 5 sick days and the other 5 days as vacation, she'd have more incentive to accrue. That said, I assume your firm would rather do the sick days because it's ultimately a cost savings over paying out for vacation days.
I'm not sure why it bothers you that she take so much time off. In all my years of having a secretary, I've used them for like 1 hour/week at the most but still have to give Xmas gift and admin day gift or whatever. Your standards for an admin should be lower.

You should probably just have 5 days of sick leave and then decide whether or not you want to give more PTO which you have to pay for. Might not affect your secretary but it probably would for others who like to get paid for unused PTO. |

Only TTT nanny companies/firms differentiate between "sick days" and "vacation days" because it invites a weird discussion about what counts as what. If you offer 2 weeks of vacation and 10 days of sick days, just call it 24 days of PTO and don't act as an autistic nanny state company.

Employers WANT their employees to stay home when sick because otherwise they are more likely to get their colleagues sick. So overall productivity can go down when sick people come to work. If the employer just says hey, you get 24 PTO days, use them how you will, that is better for employees, but then they are loathe to stay home when sick because it means losing one of their otherwise vacation days, so it hurts employers beyond just the cost of PTO.
On the other hand, if you differentiate between vacation days and sick days, employees are more likely to stay home with a cold, etc (which employers want). However, you're also likely to see that the Friday before a long weekend an employee is suddenly "sick". Employers generally don't mind the time off here (which is why some just do PTO only), but the issue is this is always unscheduled. With PTO, you know a week or so in advance that you'll need coverage for that person, but nobody tells you a couple weeks in advance that they are going to be "sick". Employers who are more concerned about planning might go to a PTO only model whereas employees whose absence isn't that detrimental are more likely to have differentiated days. |
