You have to be willing to play around with learning all the ways it can be set up though (and there are a lot). The biggest issue is valve doesn't have a tutorial for this shit

E.g. the Bethesda provided Skyrim config mocks a controller and isn't very good. But once you bother with assigning proper KBM settings it's really nice

The gyro especially is very underrated and basically absent in default configs. I'm slowly getting used to it for aiming in shooters

For games like skylines or civ it works very well out of the box

Works fine but civ 6 is basically unreadable on the TV since the UI doesn't scale (seriously, wtf is the point of built in steam controller support if you can't read it on a TV)

Oh. I don't know what a steam controller is. Assumed it's like a xbone or ps controller. Can't play on desktop?

Bought one a year ago for the rare occasion I SteamLink to my living room TV. Decades of muscle memory on traditional controllers make using it uncomfortable. I'm more likely to stay at my PC and use an Xbone controller if I'm playing something that calls for a controller.

It definitely takes a bit of getting used to but I don't see going back to an Xbox controller. The only advantage is in really simple to control games the Xbox controller is a bit more comfortable to hold

And in complex to control games, M+KB is superior to even the best controller.

I think the Steam Controller is an interesting piece of tech in search of a use case.

It won't touch KBM for twitch RTS or moba shit but I can see how someone who gets good with the steam controller (especially using the gyro for fine aiming) could be just as good as 99% of KBM players. Using the KBM mode of the steam controller is way better than the default controller mode for stuff like Skyrim too

Problem is like I said none of this is at all obvious when you buy it. You'd think valve would at least throw in a free copy of portal and steam controller configuration walkthrough or something, but no. It's a great piece of hardware that's far too "nerdy" to setup at the moment.

Reviews seem terrible except for those who want to play turn based strategy games on a couch.

No.

That's my point. It's a 175 piece of hardware that valve did a 120 job of documenting. With the right setup you can control stuff very precisely but it's not obvious how to go about doing this without reading shit online. Valve is too reliant on companies making their own configs I think, which often suck

I just don't know why I'd want one. The Dpad apparently sucks badly, which is pretty much an auto ding, and the analog stick isn't anything special, and there's only one.

I don't want to play Civ on my couch, so I have no use for it and it's a downgrade from a knockoff xbox controller, and a huge downgrade from a mouse for any game requiring skill.

it makes a very solid controller for rocket league

too bad valve probably gives less of a shit about it since steamOS went absolutely nowhere. I've beat the shit out of mine and it still works perfectly after over 2 years, which certainly wasn't the case with xbox controllers. Fucking things get stick drift when you so much as cough in their direction
