We could be dinging great candidates for the job or hiring shitty ones based on these biases.

Not for women.
I have a couple of friends who are objectively beautiful (top 1% may be pushing it, but still) in a classic way - natural blondes, D cups, and all. They are in male-dominated professions and sometimes encounter trouble with their male peers, especially supervisors.
Other than questionable sexual harassment (which can happen to dudes too), these women have experienced (1) not being taken as seriously as their male or less pretty female counterparts, (2) being viewed as ornamental, (3) being viewed as a dilettante who isn't taking the job as seriously because she can easily find a rich husband, (4) subject to assumptions/rumors that she used her "feminine wiles" inappropriately to achieve certain things, (5) jealousy/cattiness from female supervisors who may otherwise be mentors, (6) sexual come-ons from male supervisors who might otherwise be mentors, (7) being asked to "smile more" in annual reviews.
The calculus is different in professions like media or fashion which are dominated by attractive women and gays. But a Top 1% attractiveness woman in biglaw or finance might have a very different experience. ESPECIALLY if she's single.
If this woman is married, hell, she's respected more than her male counterparts. Unless she has kids and her husband makes money. Then, they just assume she doesn't take the job seriously because she's got her eye on the mommy track, just like they may for all women.
Being top 20-30% in looks does help the overall professional presentation, but most of this can be solved with personal hygiene and wearing clothes that work best with your body type. |

A fat, short, bald male may be unpleasant to look at but if he's professional, well-spoken, and personable I won't notice the fat/short/bald aspects unless there's a pronounced hygiene issue (deodorant not working, bad breath).
I can think of many fat/short/bald men (or otherwise unattractive men) that I've worked with who have been great to work with due to personality, capability, mentorship, etc. and were valued members of the team. |
