spending 2k a year is a lot if your car cost 9k

it's not like OP is asking about a 30-40k car where 2k is a small number comparatively. i'm assuming he's asking b/c he's trying ot minimize how much he spends on the car

the problem with your mode of thinking is that you're approaching it as an investment rather than an expense. over a 3-5 year time horizon, the total cost of ownership for a 9k car that requires 2k of repairs a year is a lot less than a 40k car that needs very few repairs

my point is more, if you are in the position where you are trying to buy a cheap car b/c its what you can afford, $2k a year is gonna be a lot. if he has money and is buying this for fun, then sure get it

that's why my OP said that he should just budget 1-2k for repairs, not that he shouldnt get the car

i dont think the year of rankings are very useful. how do you know how reliable a car is the first 2 years you own it? they are all fine then

1) there's a used car component in the rankings

2) if a company is ranking well even for new model years, year after year, that tells you something about the relative build quality of that make vs others

i would cop, but this is accurate. i was at a local oil change spot and heard a guy going into full meltdown over an oil change costing 120 from my regular guy. for me, a premium oil change was like 40 bucks.

I'm not much of a carmo, but this model stands up particularly well. Worth is, but only if you live in a city where you only drive 3-4 miles a day. (Eg. live in LA and only drive between West LA and Century city each day).

if you're commuting 60 miles a day on it, bad call.

If you have lots of $$$ to spend on maintenance: Yes. I know it has low miles, but things will still deteriorate and break due to age. It's an 11 year old car. Fun ride, though, and I happen to think that the styling still holds up today.

If you don't have lots of $$$ to spend on maintenance: No.

I have a 2006 750i and it isn't really that fun to drive but it looks badass and was only $10k when I bought it a couple years ago. Put about $2k into repairs at the start and haven't had to do anything but oil changes since.
