Figured out where my points of failure were, when doing 1RM with spotters, it was grip strength and the initial portion of the lift. So i focused on strengthening them, did a lot of behind the neck pressing, tried to hit rear delts, snatch shrugs, etc. did volume on mondays, normal wednesdays and heavy on fridays

Yes but it's honestly easier to fuck up shoulders on Bench I think.

I hurt my rotator cuffs breaking PR in both reps & weight and I was able to get back on overhead pressing before benching comfortably

Cr i had a ton of shoulder problems from bench, none from OHP. You can hurt your shoulders doing OHP if you go below 90 degrees it adds shearing force, if you avoid that youre fine

One big help was actually gripping the bar much closer than bench for OHP- no shoulder problems afterwards, but like you said the grip strength becomes a problem there.

i remember 2 plates being a gold standard for awhile. if you wasn't benching 2 plates, you were still in "rookie" mode and that was in...1999-2000s. I think the distribution is more uneven now. Most men couldn't bench 135 (yes, 135...1 plate...not a typo) and then there is another small set of gymmos who view 225 as graduating out of kindergarten.

Not that hard if you clean & jerk. Very, very hard if you're sitting.

I was pretty jacked back in my football days and I'm not sure that I could sit down and military press 225. I was max benching 350+ and could clean 275. Sitting, military pressing 225 is fucking sick strength.

I never tried. Jerk was all about technique, once you get the bar at shoulder level, pushing up then dropping you butt to get under it was the trick.

I always believed this exercise was the lift that directly related to explosiveness on the field. The mix of quick twitch and heavy muscle groups needed to pull this off directly corresponded to hitting & perimeter line play.

Very tough. I hit 185x3 a year ago before hurting my shoulder (not lifting). I was just under 180 bw then. Think I could have hit 225x1 if I gained around 5 lbs and hit my shoulders hard with accessory work.

At 165 bw now, it is a real pipe dream. I have serious respect for people who OHP a lot, especially if they are less than 200 lbs or so. Never seen a 225 in person, but I go to the gym when it's empty.
