A lot of Libertarians are turned off by the big-gov /gov't spending circle-jerk of the Democratic party (and many recent incarnations of the GOP) and find it easier to agree to disagree with the GOP's Jesus freaks.
Libertarians are more likely to be "politically incorrect" and "F the establishment", so it's not hard to see how some may be attracted to part of Trump's political story.
I do think Libertarians will become more Democrat-adjacent than GOP-adjacent, especially if Sessions comes down hard on weed. Libertarians are all about states' rights, even on issues that they morally agree with. Libertarians will make it a point to emphasize your right to disagree morally with someone else without punishment, but if Sessions decides to wage a domestic drug war on weed-legal states, he's crossed a line.
A Libertarian-leaning attorney told me that she would favor any SCOTUS justice who interpreted the Second Amendment and Fourteenth Amendment with the same jurisprudence - don't be "framer's intent" for one and liberal for the other. |
