I don't understand the impractical "weekend car" concept unless you are Jay Leno and have Jay Leno's money. Everyone else will be paying for an extra car, extra insurance, and parking while driving a shitty regular car. Get a nice car you can actually enjoy on a daily basis.

Also, a lot of those weekend cars scream midlife crisis ("sure, I'm a suburbanite with wife and kids but I'm FREE, driving this two-seater alone and pretending like I might pick up a young pretty girl").

I'm a "car guy" insofar as I spend a lot on cars and like nice cars. However, I don't just drive at random, and most of my driving time is during a long commute to work. My family has exactly 1 car so it has to do everything well. I don't need it to be a small sports car, a performance SUV is fine for me. It can be fine at 110-120mph, which is as fast as I'll take it, or accelerating quickly.

I appreciate hi-po sedans too. I even get the attraction of a Wrangler/Hummer. I don't understand buying a small sports car as a guy with a family, especially if that means your daily driver is some shitty minivan or something. Again, if you're filthy rich and this is your 5th car then whatever. Otherwise, get something practical.

Fun fact: supposedly the next gen Jeep Grand Cherokee is supposed to share that platform and a lot of the tech.

It seems to be image projection/marketing. The WK2 platform for the Grand Cherokee was fantastic but ultimately a Mercedes product (same platform as the ML). Take a look at what Fiat has been doing in the meantime and the corresponding reliability ratings. The more FCA has tinkered with the GC the worse the reliability. Which, of course, is why I'm out after this (and likely to a Mercedes).

cr. The wrangler prints money because they never change anything major and game all the safety regulations to make it keep the important features.

Look at the JK, the roof pillar between the A and B is bolted in. It's only subject to the less stringent convertible standards rather than the much tougher SUV ones.
