Asset - it will make you more focused, you will likely spot issues the other side will miss (if you're lit). Assuming you are lit, you will likely win your parts of the case more often than not. Assuming you're corporate, I don't know.

this question comes up a lot. the answer is almost ALWAYS to squeeze out as much time as you can making good money.

a) it's a lot of money

b) the longer you are in BIGLAW the better for your resume.. almost always..

c) you don't sound like you have a good plan now anyways

no. most people that complain about BIGLAW are pathetic losers that have never had a job before and aren't used to working hard.

Benefits of BIGLAW:

1) usually you don't have to be in at a certain time or stay til a certain time

2) If you efficiently get your hours in you can take significant time off. Lets say you bill 2000 hours by October and then your case gets slow or settles. It's not unheard of for an associate to take a full month off.

3) work is obviously more interesting.

4) you will develop better skill sets.

5) You will work in a nice upscale office, usually in a nice upscale location.

6) Lots of perks - free meals every now and then, they will pay for your mobile phone service.

I actually agree with most of this but calling people who complain pathetic losers is incorrect because there are aspects of it, such as the stress and 18 hour per day availability, that are indeed awful.

If you were raised right and developed "DAT GRIT," you can grind on through to the Other Side. The Other Side being the end of your life.

most of the people complaining are 1st and 2nd years, and they rarely are billing 18 hours a day, and if they are it's on something not stressful like document review projects.

most people who are billing massive hours in BIGLAW are 4-7 years who have decided to go all in and are not seriously complaining other than to vent.

i know, i dont do important work, especially compared to that of BIGLAW, but that doesn't really matter because in order to succeed in my shitty jerb/career i have to internalize the stress, pretend it matters, and take that stress seriously and do as BOSS wants.

Yes you can stroll in at 9:40 and you don't have to leave at the "certain time" of 5pm because you get to stay until 8:30.

You will spend something like 30-40% more of your life in your office than people who have to punch in and out at set times. Being able to come in at noon during a gap in the crazy hours doesn't make up for it. Also, when your schedule allows you to show up at noon and no one cares for more than a week or so you will start having panic attacks that your hours are going to be destroyed due to that lull and oh shit maybe I'm not busy because they're getting ready to fire me.

If he is saying he, he isn't mansplaining. He is just explaining to what he assumes is another guy. That assumption may be sexist in itself (though xo demographics would heavily suggest male), but to mansplain you have to know you are talking to a female and then "talk down". I hope this helps you understand this complex sociological idea babe

I don't do corporate so my advice is limited. It seems like the people who do better in corporate really have to get in with a good group that has continuous work or they branch out to a lot of groups. It seems more important to be outgoing in corporate than lit. If you strategize on getting in with good partners who have consistent business your life will be easier though because corporate work is steady as opposed to lit which is unpredictable.
