here's my thinking - if i lose it all my life doesn't change much in the long run. I'll have to work a year longer or whatever. now, if it blows up (or even increases to say $200) it changes my life and i could probably move back to hometown and start a biz, buy a house etc. im completely OK with losing my whole investment. at some point you have to embrace some kind of risk. ethereum is a risk ive taken and so far its been 180

He's fine because he said he stands to inherit millions later on.

A lot easier to do these extremely high risk/high reward type deals when you know you have a guaranteed safety net to radially alleviate most of the risk.

Let me clarify. I don't own the house, so it's not part of net worth. My parents own it free and clear, but they're off doing stuff most of the time. So I live here, look after everything, and save money.

Problem with using home equity is that liquidation won't net the full value of equity because of the retarded transaction costs in selling a home (agent fees, closing costs borne by seller)

Rentals have been good to me, if you can find one that cash flows and get good financing I say go for it. The numbers only work in certain parts of the country though (generally secondary cities not located in California).

mid-30s, $415K, non-lawyer, doesn't include residence.

About half of that is equity in investment real estate and another $150K is between 401k and Roth IRA.

Likely to inherit $2-4MM eventually depending upon how much parents boom. Pretty sure they won't liquidate the real estate so that's the low end estimate, but beyond that all bets are off.

Yes, I am

Literally 90% of the people I know who got a full time job at a non profit did the volunteer route

Just use it as a stepping stone to something else. Do litigation at a non profit or whatever and then go to a small firm. Right now you are literally untouchable since you have no work experience.

Eh, I think it is all FAKE NEWS until I have an exit and I don't really optimize for anything other than continuing to do what I'm doing while retaining control. I'd rather not secondary unless I was 100m+ in valuation, so I have a long way to go.

I don't care about money much. I like doing what I like doing and I'm willing to live in a hovel to do it. It just happens what I'm interested in makes for decent business right now.

Leaving law was clearly the wrong choice from the financial side. I was pretty set over there (junior associate w/ 500k+ book of recurring business growing each year). Worked almost entirely on my own matters my third year. I just didn't like it much.

I used to live in the rental property, then moved to a different city but kept it and rented it out.

My life goal right now is to pay it off quickly and then have free and clear money coming in for the rest of my life. I owe about 220K on it right now. It brings in about 2500 a month in rental income, though after taxes and other costs that's more like 1600-1700 a month... but still...

no I basically just rent to chill low maintenance people that don't complain unless something genuinely goes wrong, and just charge them a little bit less than the going rate. the cheap rent also means less turnover so I don't have to worry about constant new renters that might not pay.

thanks bro. unfortunately the cash flow is negative because it was on a 15 year mortgage before I moved out. I decided not to switch to a 30 year because of the transaction costs involved. But I only have 8 years left on the mortgage til it's paid off... and if I make extra payments I can probably cut that down to 4 years.

I'm already on my 6th year, 6.4% interest rate (can't refinance my loans)..I'm paying just 15% until it is forgiven. At this rate it comes out to 190K forgiven.

Actually when my salary goes up on my 2018 tax returns, I get switched to a qualified payment capped out at what would have been the payment under a 10 year standard plan based on my ORIGINAL balance from 2011. It doesn't make sense, as it benefits high earners, but those are the rules.

weird, so what's the total repayment including the 15% over 20 years plus the tax bomb?

would it make more sense to work for a "public sector" hospital and get it PLSFed? I think the pay's a bit lower, but you get it forgiven in 10 years without a tax bomb, i believe

Oh yea, I should have clarified, I am going to be working at a 501c, so I'm excited to get these loans eliminated in 4.5 years from now (I made some careless mistakes in earlier and lost a few qualified payments). And no tax bomb.

I had to take a pay cut, and am making ~100k less than I would have in private practice, so it kind of evens out. When my loans are forgiven, my pay capped out at 400k in a couple years (shitty for radiology), I'll have to consider walking away. I'd rather be making 700k in Florida.

There are a lot of other jobs besides law and medicine...like tech/accounting/finance, etc. If i were to recommend any field, I'd say do programming...lots of $$$ at age 21 straight out of uni, lots of jobs, mobility, etc. My dad made the equivalent of $500k 2017 dollars in the late 1980s programming in SF Bay Area with like 500k in stock options.

I almost regretted law in biglaw (except it paid off all of my loans and gave me some savings), but fed gov is pretty sweet.

Going back though, I'd prob have just done tech or accounting. No GC flame grad school, I didn't have any undergrad debt, six figure salary straight out at 21 for programming plus stock options, accounting is secure, lower salary but strict 9 to 5 jobs outside of big 4.

As I stated above, it's not about the $$$$$$$.

I have perhaps the only job in the world in which I constantly see something new every day, make an impact on people's lives, and continually learn.

I could have easily worked law/business but at the end of the day I'd feel like a piece of shit.

Other fields like sports and art are worthwhile but don't provide the higher calling in which I am fortunate to be in now.

Keep in mind humans are the biggest parasites and polluters on this planet...so keeping more of us alive is destroying the planet as a whole.

If I could make a deal with "God" to annihilate the entire human race in exchange for animal doods ruling (knowing I'd be killing myself too), I'd do it in a heartbeat.

This is one reason why I haven't had kids and am not sure I want any....

Yes thats why I am not in OBGYN where you're basically helping the scum of the earth reproduce like vermin.

In my field nearly everyone is thankful for what I do and understands the magnitude of their condition.

Just imagine cumming up with ever sophisticated techniques so that the absolute mouthbreathing retards of the world can reproduce with impunity and continue to not give a single shit about you're efforts.

Thats OBGYN in a nutshell.

'If I could make a deal with "God" to annihilate the entire human race in exchange for animal doods ruling (knowing I'd be killing myself too), I'd do it in a heartbeat. '

I cumpletely agree.

But whats the endgame of corporatism?

Destruction of the environment.

Right, but you don't have to work for corporations (although that's where most of the money is).

99% of what humans do is just to propagate ourselves and use the planet for our own selfish means.

Plus a lot of medicine is about $$$$$ - like big pharma, having more consumers to buy shit, keeping alive olds when there is no QOL so that hospitals or whoever can make millions of dollars.

We should just kill ourselves IMO....human race's TTTness is so depressing to think about.

This thread made me realize how far this shitmedicine route has set me back. 10 years opportunity cost, 250k in debt, and the government is still chipping away at our reimbursements. MACRA is a joke too. I tried modeling my reports for the practice I moonlight at by them, and a normal CT Head ends up looking like a 3 page disclaimer statement.

Grad school in general is GC flame...esp in the US. It's all a big scam.

It doesn't financially make sense anymore unless you get a full ride or some shit. The boomers had it made - cheap schooling, high salaries, etc. Now it's a fucking joke.
