My research shows that it takes just over a grand a day to keep my wife happy when she plans vacations. It's ridiculous. And stuff like "two suits for each of us" is really one suit every two years for me and two or three every spring and fall for her. But we have a comfortable house in a decent col area, don't waste money on cars (tho she's been pushing) and to her credit she is on board with maxing every retirement account possible, and then some. So it's not all bad.

Living well in a major city in 2018: being able to afford a car payment/to buy a new car, go on a couple nice vacations a year, buy nice clothes and really worry about the cost (may need to go to Nordstrom Rack instead of Nordstrom for this), buy Christmas presents for your whole list and not sweat the cost much. go out on dates/eat at moderately expensive restaurants and pay for a baby sitter 1-2 times a month, still put a responsible amount in 401k and 529s. If I can do all that and live paycheck to paycheck with 4 months worth of monthly nut in liquid immediately available accounts I feel like I’m making enough. But if I don’t save anything beyond that I’m basically committing to wagecuck until I’m 60. Spending less than that and saving an extra 25-50k is hugely beneficial psychologically in that sense.
