You'll never feel "well off" based on non-capital gains income. You're still working for it, you're going to get AMT tax fucked, and you're still going to be pre-paying the IRS quarterly.

Once you amass enough capital + get a living situation setup where your fixed costs are fairly low, then you'll feel "well off".

Couple weddings every year, vacation or two, one moderate home repair, one new piece of furniture, do something nice for a family member, two new suits for each of us... Our "one off" expenses average way more than 2k per month. It drives me nuts.

lol mine isn't too bad on a day to day basis, and tbf she makes a solid income, almost as much as me. But shit like vacations... ljl brother. My research shows that it takes just over a grand a day to keep my wife happy when she plans vacations. It's ridiculous. And stuff like "two suits for each of us" is really one suit every two years for me and two or three every spring and fall for her. But we have a comfortable house in a decent col area, don't waste money on cars (tho she's been pushing) and to her credit she is on board with maxing every retirement account possible, and then some. So it's not all bad.

in all seriousness

we own a house and wife doenst spend that much. no kids, but near future. dont have "real wealth". have to think about job security (b/c im paranoid and went thru ITE) and someday moving to higher QOL job that will pay less. we take nice vacations but not insanely splurgy, eat out a decent amoutn but again not really splurgy

where does all the money go?

If you make $500k in a major city with a family you feel like you can either save or have a particularly nice lifestyle....but you don't feel like you can do both.

Living well in a major city in 2018: being able to afford a car payment/to buy a new car, go on a couple nice vacations a year, buy nice clothes and really worry about the cost (may need to go to Nordstrom Rack instead of Nordstrom for this), buy Christmas presents for your whole list and not sweat the cost much. go out on dates/eat at moderately expensive restaurants and pay for a baby sitter 1-2 times a month, still put a responsible amount in 401k and 529s. If I can do all that and live paycheck to paycheck with 4 months worth of monthly nut in liquid immediately available accounts I feel like I’m making enough. But if I don’t save anything beyond that I’m basically committing to wagecuck until I’m 60. Spending less than that and saving an extra 25-50k is hugely beneficial psychologically in that sense.
