this is what people dont get

"GC"= large corporations partnering with federal, state and local governments to pass regulations that crowd out small business competitors

a large biz can easily afford putting in a mandatory wheelchair ramp but that could be the deathblow to a small biz operating on razor thin margins

any regulations that are effectively barriers to entry are as GC as it gets. but idiot naive libs buy into the offered pretext of helping consumers or some affected subset like the handicapped and think it's some blow against "GC". ljl

Correct. The mandatory angle is all fucked up now and you need to rebuild it and until you do you are strictly liable for statutory damages, no need of any actual harm is needed. Good thing we are sticking it to GC now with these thousands of pages of inscrutable ads regs.

I noticed one of these at a chain hotel in proletown USA. It was an indoor pool that was basically the size of four jacuzzis. I thought to myself that the crane probably cost a fuckton of money and would literally be used a small handful of times, if at all.

So true.

The cripple-dipper ruins the poolside aesthetic, and gives me a kind of gross feeling. They make the pool area feel unhygienic, they look like they'd be hard to keep from having a slick layer of algae on them.

None of these would look better with a cripple dipper:

A law made my life possible: Reflecting on the many doors opened by the Americans with Disabilities Act

BY VERONICA WISSEL

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Sunday, July 26, 2015, 5:00 AM

I was born 34 years ago with a rare condition called arthrogryposis that affected the muscle development in my arms and legs. My young, brave parents navigated new waters, guiding me through dozens of surgeries, casts and hospital visits.

I got my first power wheelchair when I was two years old.

When the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, I was nine. I was not aware of its passage, or of the fact that I was already benefiting from the enactment of its predecessor laws, like the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 — which gave me the right to go to public school with the other kids in my town even though I used a wheelchair.

I am a member of the first generation of Americans with disabilities who grew up in a country where it is illegal to discriminate against an existing or potential employee or student just because she has a disability — and where movie theaters, museums, hotels, office buildings, restaurants and bars are required to be accessible so that people like me can see shows, meet friends, travel and be part of our larger communities.

Growing up in this world, at times I have taken it all for granted. I didn’t think about the ADA when I applied to college and traveled across the country to live on my own for the first time in a dorm room that was adapted to be wheelchair accessible.

I didn’t think about the ADA when, in 1999, I first attended college classes in historic buildings retrofitted with ramps and elevators.

I didn’t think about the ADA when, in 2008, I completed law school and was admitted to the New York bar, even though many lawyers in previous generations were denied legal licenses and jobs simply due to their disabilities.

I have rarely thought of the ADA as playing a part in my meeting and marrying my husband and expecting our first child, even though in years past, many mothers with disabilities were forced to give up their children.

And I rarely think about the ADA now as I board the bus every day to get to my office in Midtown — the same bus that was equipped with a ramp as a result of lawsuits brought in the city to enforce the ADA.

I rarely think of role of the ADA in my life, because the law and the radical transformation in the way America treats and thinks about people with disabilities resulted in my ability to lead a very ordinary life — to participate in the same kind of life and hit the same milestones that all parents wish for their children.

Even just 30 years ago, someone like me would likely live her entire life in a nursing home or state institution — that was where my mother’s (short-tenured) doctor suggested she send me when I was born. Thirty years ago, you would not see people in wheelchairs at restaurants, on the bus, in a classroom or working in an office, because these places were not accessible — and there was really no need to make them accessible, since people with disabilities were hidden away and separated from the community.

The requirements of the ADA can be burdensome, and they require all levels of government, as well as private businesses, to spend significant amounts of money to accommodate what is in some cases a relatively limited population.

But we as a country decided that the social good that could come from bringing a whole population that had previously been warehoused away into the community, and providing these people with access to the most basic privileges of American life, like education, employment and public venues, was worth the cost.

There is still a long way to go in fully implementing the vision in that law of an inclusive society, one in which people with disabilities can live, work and socialize alongside everyone else. One critical area that needs further attention is transportation, particularly in New York City, where most people rely on mass transit, taxis and private car services for day-to-day travel.

Even today, most subway stops do not have elevators, and only a small portion of taxis and a negligible number of for-hire vehicles are wheelchair accessible.

People will always question how much a company or a city should have to spend to make a service or business accessible. I can’t quantify the cost of all of the incremental changes that had to be made to bring me where I am today, but I can say that to me, the value of those changes has been immeasurable. They represent the value of being allowed not just to live in our country but to be part of it.

That was the initial purpose and should be ultimate goal that we continue to work toward: to provide all Americans the opportunity to participate in and contribute to the future of our country and our communities.

Wissel is a corporate lawyer in New York.

It seriously sucks ass that MFH is non-accessible. It' understandable, because it'd probably cost 1 billion to put an elevator in, but it's still disgraceful.

all hotel pools and hot tubs have these unsightly cranes installed next to them that allows cripples to swim or sit in the hot tub. I'm sure the cost is obscene, but of course hotels are required to have them to be ADA compliant.

Has anyone ever at any point in their life seen one of these in use at a hotel? What cripple is going to a hotel and going ducking swimming? I could understand at a YMCA or health club that makes some sense I guess.
