There is a good collection of essays on this topic. It's devastating. Mix of biglaw, shitlaw, white collar, and unemployeds who tried to break in to all three. It's called Autoadmit.

Aren't you under 40? It's not too late to change course if you really hate it. I don't mean a total career change but an in house gig or get epah to hire you so you can work from home. Your kids are only young once.

I remember hearing about a biglaw partner who had to have their secretary pick them up from surgery bc they didn't have anyone else in their life to do it. That one stuck with me.

I had an ex-fiancee (biglaw shrew) who called me a few months after we last spoke to have me pick her up from a surgery. It was the saddest thing. Also, I didn't answer her call. :(

I heard of a consulting partner who had to take months off work to "fix his kid". Dunno how that turned out.

All 3 of the "cool" younger partners I've worked with have made it very clear that they're miserable. One flamed out and is an angel investor, one got into firm admin so he didn't have to keep churning as many deals, and one is still holding his life together but is aging at about a 2x rate.

2 of the 3 have unpleasant marriages where it sounds like the spouses give them a lot of shit for how little they're around. The other is divorced and remarried to a younger shrew who works all the time and he seems happier.

Agreed, it's a mutual hell and there are no idle hands to spend all the money, cheat, complain to friends at daily wine lunches, etc. She's also about 15 years younger.

I don't really think it's mutual hell though. There's less pressure or worry about either one getting fired, because the other can still make $$$, so you can relax and excel like Peter Gibbons in office space.
