Subject: Bringing in business as associate -- give partner credit?

3rd year biglaw M&A associate, brought in client with about $1 million in work.

My mentor just made partner and doesn't have a big book. He arranged for me to be the originator on the original matter (and took big write offs on his realization rate), but I'm thinking of making him the originator going forward.

I get nothing as originator, but he gets a cut and makes a good showing for his first year as a partner. I don't want to make partner, so am ok with him taking over the the client relationship.

FWIW, He's always been a solid guy who has gone to bat for me and has never suggested that he get origination credit.

I used to split my originations with the person doing the hours on the job, particularly if I didn't feel like I had the expertise for it (which was normally the case).

Yes. Maybe that's the answer. Still, this partner has really supported me and I'd rather see the money go to him than the partnership as a whole.

If you don't care about partnership then yes, do him a solid. Otherwise, give the origination to someone with power not some first year partner.

Counterpoint: people with power have dozens of sycophants trying to suck up to them. Give it to this guy and cement an organic connection to a partner who will be seen as young and dynamic in six years, not a former heavy hitter with his best days behind you who will never remember your name.

This whole thread is pathetic. You just brought in a ton of business and you're gonna pass the money that is paid for that exact purpose off to someone who did jack fucking shit and already has ten times as much as you, without even first asking for it. No one ever got to the top by giving away business.

protip: demand your name is on the retainer. trust me. and demand you have all client contact. otherwise when you have the talk with partners who don't know the client exists, they on't believe you.

1 - put your name on the retainer

2 - have your bro call them up and say they want you to be partner before paying.

3 - profit.

4 - if they say they won't make you partner because of some lockstep progression bullshit threaten to quit and they can hire you back as a lateral partner with the business. otherwise kiss the million and your billables for the year away.
