Biotech was supposed to be the next big thing in the late 1990s. It was discovered to not be the next big thing a few short years after that.

I'm not sure why people keep going into it.

Two reasons people bother with this career.

1) If you come up with a good idea that is patentable you can sell it for gatormo level money or more.. You usually need a phd to do that though so the opportunity cost is sizable, and your odds of success are low.

2) Biology and its bastard kin are the most TTT of all STEM majors and if you don't go to/finish grad school or go to medical school, these low paying shitjerbs are your only choice to avoid getting NOJERBPWNED

A lot of people coming out of school do tech work for two years, especially if they didn't have a real research experience in undergrad, to put their resumes together for med or grad school.

Those that don't go to grad school eventually transition to something like regulatory affairs. A shit ton of people from my grad school class are in medical writing, which should tell you something about the job market for biomedical scientists.

Generally, if you have been doing bench work for 20 years, it's not because you are really good at benchwork.
