When teams trade players, lottery picks, and the like, how are the deals documented?

Is it a simple affair with league-approved forms?

Do they call in the biglaw tranny lawyers to work their magic with bespoke 50-page contract assignments?

There are forms attached to the CBA that they use. The previous CBA is floating around on the internet out there.

Maybe working for the league to make sure it complies with the salary cap. The forms submitted to the league aren't drafted by biglaw firms.

LOL. Smashcut to some Fordham 2L at OCI telling a Proskauer of counsel that he's looking to go to a firm that handles NBA trades.

I think it's just handled by the Basketball Operations or some other title person, who is likely a former jock and may or may not have a law or accounting degree.

lol no. They're filled out by ex-jock GMs and the league office just reviews and approves the trades.

Worked on a trade once when I was in Biglaw. A small piece of it, but essentially had to review a FIBA clause re some overseas player that was part of a larger trade -- some buyout clause. It took nothing more than an hour or so, but the actual sports law attys seemed busy.

The client wasn't the player but the team itself.
