not really. the quality of the product is in precipitous decline.

rules changes and terrible officiating have made watching the games less interesting; the forward pass really needs to be reigned in. the same teams win divisions/wild cards every year while some franchises are perpetual jokes. in the same vein, you aren't even guaranteed to have a competitive game at the highest levels of play; of the past 4 super bowls, one was exciting, two were complete squashes, and another looked that way for three quarters.

commercials and timeouts have become too burdensome, making games drag on forever. what should be about 60 minutes of play and a halftime intermission is now bloated to 3-4 hours of viagra, fanduel, and prolefeed ads punctuated by some football.

and then all the corporate poz and off-the-field antics of DA AFFLETES is factored in. what a shitshow!

agree with all the GC shit you point out. BUT disagree with a couple things:

>>the same teams win divisions/wild cards every year while some franchises are perpetual jokes.

people complain when there's too much parity, too. choose your poison.

>>in the same vein, you aren't even guaranteed to have a competitive game at the highest levels of play; of the past 4 super bowls, one was exciting, two were complete squashes, and another looked that way for three quarters.

that's sports. go back in time... plenty of blow-out SBs in the past. plenty of 4-0 / 4-1 world series and nba finals in the past, etc.

you're never guaranteed a competitive championship

while i can imagine that perfect parity, where everything is basically a coin flip, would be undesirable, there's got to be a middle ground like the NHL, where you don't have teams with 15-year postseason droughts.

as for competitive championships, i understand that real events are not always going to be competitive; variance happens. but the way the nfl, particularly the super bowl, is marketed it really can't afford to have blowouts. it's this tremendous event with all sorts of fanfare, that every media organ hypes up. looks like shit to the casual viewers when one team gets squashed.

might as well go full wwnfl. i mean, everyone is cheating already.

i agree re parity.

there's nothing you can do to guarantee a competitive SB. sometimes one team is just too good. sometimes it's a bad matchup. or a bad day for one team.

the problem is the hype.

also, continuity and dynasties are a good thing for a sports league. sports isnt interesting if it's essentially a raffle every year

i'll concede that my point on the passing game becoming too dominant isn't that strong. just citing the inflation of yards/TDs does not make for a compelling argument, and complaining about gaming PI calls would probably seem like grasping.

i do maintain that joke franchises make the league look like crap, though. there shouldn't be teams with 15-year playoff droughts in a system where ~35% of the teams make the playoff each season. dominance and dynasties xan still exist, but perennial losers serve no purpose besides being the butt of jokes.

- incredibly high roster churn. think teams are operating at a higher level of economic efficiency today and turning over rosters more aggressively. maybe there was high roster turnover 20 years ago too but as the years add up as an adult it seems like it’s harder to keep up with a team on a year-to-year basis through casual fandom alone. feel like i’m extremely out-of-touch with my team.

- gc culture. football has become an aggressively national sport, so much of the league is orchestrated from the top down. every team wears the same captain patch, every team wears pink on the same days, etc. it doesn’t feel like i'm watching my “local team” anymore, it feels like i'm watching the local franchise of the NFL product. baseball and hockey sometimes complain that they’re “too regional” but honestly that’s part of the charm.

- player culture. honestly the sjw stuff isn’t even the worst of it, at least it doesn’t really get in the way of watching the game itself. the NFL has become what the NBA was in the early 2000s. each game feels like a massive chimp-out. the chad ochocinco and TO shtick felt fun and tongue-in-cheek. OBJ shtick etc just seems histrionic and gay. it's hard to watch.

Roster churn is at an all time high and careers are shorter than ever. This has something to do with injury but more to do with the live tuna general manager$ squeezing out 28 year olds for 22 year old who will play football for league min. If you aren't a QB, a pass rushing end, or a shutdown cornerback, you ain't getting paid.

Injuries also factor in. Especially at the NFL level these guys have trained their bodies to the limits of human capability. They are bigger faster and harder hitting than ever before and they're bodies can't take it.

i only ever watch NFL playoffs (not the GC Bowl) & the preseason. in the playoffs the corporate entertainers dressed in football outfits seem to put more effort into their performances, which is enjoyable. the GC Bowl is horrible every year & without question GC personified-- basically just a daylong commercial fest interrupted sporatically by corporate employees dressed in football/coach/ref outfits mimicking a football game. preseason is fun to watch dreams die every time a poor undrafted FA drops a pass. for NFL "games" i'm usually just rooting for CTE

Definitely. As an Eagles fan, this year is all about the development of Wentz. Haven't felt excited about the development of a QB here in nearly 20 years and, unlike with McNabb, they actually seem to be trying to give him some legit weapons early on. Don't think they make the playoffs this year but if Wentz has a solid year and finishes in the top ~10 QBs statistically it will spell good things for the future.

They'll be the usual cannibalization in the NFC East. Probably the hardest division in the league to predict over the past 10 years (basically since the Eagles had their run).

This is a big part of it for me, too, especially with living cross-country.

Talking with him about news or politics is no fun now since he's been infected by lib poison after years of casual right of center politics; I hate talking about work on the weekends; and there's only so much we can talk about the grandkids.

Yea exactly. I'm in coastal shit for work. It's a good reminder to talk to the old man every week. And it's fun because you have so much shared experience to reference.

My dad is in are country. To old too hunt, retired, divorced - what else is there? I mean we talk about local and college teams too but the NFL was and is a big part of my life. Some of best memories are going home after church and having mom make a "special Sunday" meal while my dad and bros and I watched the game.

We did the exact same thing on Sundays - church and all. We would never miss a Bills game.

Not looking forward to the constant pats trolling and Brady pole smoking from ESPN and everyone else who covers sports but looking forward to the season in general.
