Weird how a roughly 15 point IQ gap survived through desegregation, voting rights for blacks, massive amounts of new federal programs for the poor, affirmative action, "Diversity" campaigns designed to raise the status of African Americans etc. Wonder why that could be? My hypothesis is that there was an offsetting massive increase in the nebulous forces of institutional racism. Gotta be that.

White people, and specifically non-WASP white people, were imported in huge numbers in the 20th century at the same time the U.S. created the greatest expansion of wealth in the history of human civilization, and white people captured a disproportionate share of the gains, especially non-WASPs whites v. their historical wealth on a percentage basis. Given this context the fact that Blacks kept pace while they were subjected to a series of liberal social experiments that proved to be deeply flawed in a variety of ways (e.g. inner city high-rise public housing structures that had huge negative external effects on their neighborhoods) it's actually pretty remarkable that Blacks kept pace. Given the widening wealth gap and the huge and multi-generational expansion of the White middle class that benefited Blacks only slightly by comparison, you would expect the gap to grow significantly, not stay the same. Also I'm not sure how motivated I would be to gun for those extra 150 points if I knew I was already getting into my state flagship without them. Comparing that group to the group who gets shit on the most other than poor Asians in college admissions is clearly apples and oranges. I've never been able to get a satisfactory answer on how selection bias might alter this stat since poor blacks can still get into college with very low scores and poor whites can't. But it does underscore a basic truth that focusing all our resources on giving extra boosts to rich black people seems like a dumb way to address the issue, albeit a good way to maximize tuition paid. |

These tests show equivalent predictive validity between races, and they have consistent intercorrelations. If they were measuring different things this shouldn't be the case. They would either significantly underpredict black real world performance, or show a pattern of variability that is different from other ethnic groups (which would suggest cultural biases and differences in skill profiles). |

the strong progress in many domains through deep learning systems (model-free reinforcement learning, vision, audio recognition etc) seems to validate the view the learning algorithms the brain uses are probably not very complex. DeepMind's latest RL algorithm beats humans at 40 out of 57 Atari games. transfer learning and model-based RL are still unresolved problems, but the capabilities of existing algorithms are still extremely impressive considering where we were just a few years ago.
i increasingly believe Shane Legg's predicted date of around 2026 is not going to be very far off. |

You also have to look at how much the tech world relies and will continue to rely on the hype of AI for selling its products - every customer service chat bot is being marketed as an "AI" now as one simple example. So on one level the incentives are greatly skewed towards overhyping the progress we've made towards AGI.
The average person, even the average "technologist" who keeps up closely with all this while not formerly trained in math / ai, doesn't realize how separate AGI is from marginal improvements in some deep learning application or reinforcement learning task of a computer playing GO or whatever game. So an advance was made in RL that now the deepmind algorithm DESTROYS everyone at GO when it only won ~80% of games a few years ago (nevermind the specific numbers) - what does that really get us in terms of AGI?
The problem with AGI is not with some performance metrics on an algorithm that's just not quite good enough yet, the problem with AGI is that it's an insanely complex problem that we don't even understand yet how to structure and how it would fully work.
So when we see advancements in "AI", for example a new deep learning algorithm has substantially improved its image classification / performance accuracy, for the short term this is a big deal b/c it gets us machines that can mimic narrow human tasks with great performance that closely resembles (or even beats) human performance. So we will first see an explosion of "AI" products that are extremely good at doing those narrow tasks - but taking that and generalizing it to some fully functioning AGI is not only a long ways off, but a completely different type and structure of problem to solve than "increase this algorithm's performance on GO or audio classification or whatever.

This debate is pretty silly now. observable environmental factors do not account for the gap. More importantly, when we look at how IQ alleles vary across populations there is now strong evidence of differences in natural selection. East asian populations were selected more for high IQ than whites, who were selected more for high IQ than blacks. |

Hbd research shows a whole host of other outcomes are predicated on your genes, eg there are genes for delayed gratification, violence, empathy etc. That's to say nothing of how various groups have learned overtime to implicitly favor others who have tells hinting at similar lineage.
That said, it shouldn't be a basis to discriminate against individuals. |
