CLE providers have to be accredited by the state bar and part of that accreditation process is robust anti-fraud measures. It's not serious enough for disbarment, but a six month to a year suspension is a very common resolution when fraud is detected. The fraud detection isn't perfect but if you're listening to the CLE's on mute you are playing with fire. There's not even much you can do to defend yourself, they have the audit report that says you had the CLE on mute or whatever fraud they detected. They'll usually wait until you certify compliance with the CLE requirements at renewal, then bust you. So if you're retiring and don't intend to renew it's fine, but if you're going to keep practicing law you best really be doing your CLE's.
