socal (LA area) is better weather, much more attractive people, worse traffic and more spread out yet still more crowded
norcal (SF bay area) is better nature, more city like, much uglier people
lots of douches on both sides but LA wins.
i personally prefer SF because it is a pain to get anywhere in LA |

Like in most places, it gets worse inland and is generally OK on the coast. Shelter Cove is cool as shit.
Coastal Sonoma and southern Mendo are basically paradise and meth/opiate free.
The central coast has problem spots around northern Monterey County but most of it is too rich. |
