Why Running is Bad

Theory: running is painful and terrible because it bad. Eating, sleep, and sex are pleasureable because your body wants you to do them. Why is your body constantly crying out for mercy for you to stop whenever you run?

1. Running will not result in weight loss. You just do not burn nearly enough calories exercising to make headway past a terrible diet. You also stimulate your appetite which if involves eating more terrible shit, which it does, just immediately cancels it out.

"What we put in our mouths is most important. For example, to walk off the calories found in single pat of butter, you’d have to add an extra 700 yards to your stroll that evening. A quarter-mile jog for each sardine we put in our mouth—and that’s just the edible part. And those who choose to eat two chicken legs better get out on their own two legs, and run an extra three miles that day to outrun weight gain. And that’s for steamed chicken; skin removed."

https://nutritionfacts.org/video/diet-or-exercise-whats-more-important-for-weight-loss/

2. Running is inherently dangerous and injuries cannot be avoided:

The data suggests up to 79 percent of all runners are injured every year,” says Stephen Messier, the director of the J. B. Snow Biomechanics Laboratory at Wake Forest University. “What’s more, those figures have been consistent since the 1970s.” Messier is currently 11 months into a study for the U.S. Army and estimates that 40 percent of his 200 subjects will be hurt within a year. “It’s become a serious public health crisis.

Nothing seems able to check it: not cross-training, not stretching, not $400 custom-molded orthotics, not even softer surfaces. And those special running shoes everyone thinks he needs? In 40 years, no study has ever shown that they do anything to reduce injuries. On the contrary, the U.S. Army’s Public Health Command concluded in a report in 2010, drawing on three large-scale studies of thousands of military personnel, that using shoes tailored to individual foot shapes had “little influence on injuries.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/06/magazine/running-christopher-mcdougall.html

3. Running prematurely ages you. It's not your imagination: marathon runners look terrible:

Could exercise be creating harmful free radicals? Oxidizing glucose to produce energy for our bodies is messy, creating free radicals the way cars burning their fuel produce combustion by-products out the exhaust. This happens even if we’re just idling, living our day-to-day lives. What if we rev our bodies up and start exercising and really start burning fuel? Then we create more free radicals, more oxidative stress, and so, need to eat even more antioxidant-rich foods.

Why do we care about oxidative stress? Well, it’s “implicated in virtually every known human disease and there is an increasing body of evidence linking free radical production to the process of aging.” Why? Because free radicals can damage DNA, our very genetic code. Well, if free radicals damage DNA, and exercise creates free radicals, does exercise damage our DNA if we don’t have enough antioxidants in our system to douse the radicals? Yes, in fact, ultra-marathoners show evidence of DNA damage in about 10% of their cells tested during a race, which may last for up to two weeks after a marathon. But what about just short bouts of exercise? We didn’t know until recently.

After just five minutes of moderate or intense cycling we can get an uptick in DNA damage. We think it’s the oxidative stress, but “regardless of the mechanism of exercise-induced DNA damage” the fact that a very short bout of high-intensity exercise can cause an increase in damage to DNA is a cause for concern.

https://nutritionfacts.org/2014/05/13/preloading-with-watercress-before-exercise/

4. Running doesn't make up for later inactivity:

And, what’s crazy is that “the time spent sitting was independently associated with total mortality, regardless of physical activity level.” Heart disease mortality was significantly elevated—even in people who otherwise exercised regularly. So, just going to the gym after your desk job may not eliminate the risks of sitting around all day. It’s something our bodies never evolved to do.

https://nutritionfacts.org/video/standing-up-for-your-health/

5. Running is solitary. Injuries and oxidative stress can be overlooked to build and maintain social relationships during competitive sports. When you run, you are usually all alone.

--

So to optimize health you should be on a treadmill desk going 2-3 mph to not affect cognititon all day and avoid injuries and oxidative stress. HTH.

companies that take advantage of the body's receptors to make things feel artificially "good" should be outlawed and the people doing it jailed

it's the same reason heroin should be illegal and drug dealers put in jail

abuse of our natural receptors.

I'm just saying his first paragraph is profoundly, amazingly stupid.

The benefits of high intensity exercise are well proven (neurological, cardiological, etc etc), and almost all exercise isn't enjoyable (physically at least) in the immediate term. Regardless of whether running in particular is "good exercise", "feeling achy means BAD!" is literally the logic I'd expect of a toddler.

It was immediately apparent that running can lead to more injuries, and the risk goes up as running programs get more intense. Studies have found that runners have significantly higher injury rates than walkers (one study found that young men who run or jog had a 25 percent higher risk of injuries than walkers), and that ultramarathoners are at an even greater risk. The main running-related injuries include tibia stress syndrome, Achilles tendon injuries, and plantar fasciitis.

Overall, more than half of people who run will experience some sort of injury from doing so, while the percentage of walkers who will get hurt is around 1 percent. Interestingly, it seems you can walk pretty much endlessly without any increased risk of hurting yourself.

You are an idiot and possess high school level critical thinking abilities.

Most runners get injured because they have been sitting on their asses 10 hours a day, resulting in a completely worthless set of core muscles. This leads minor muscle groups and your flexors, tendons etc. to overcompensate for your fucked up running form and hence you get injured. Biggest source of injury are your achilles, knee joint connective tissue, hip flexors, groin and hamstrings, as they have to work overtime to keep your flabby soft body balanced. Shoes are mostly marketing garbage, you should avoid motion control or shoes with high heel platforns. The flatter the sole the better, that is assuming you are not overweight and have a weak core. If the latter applies to you, don’t run bc you will get injured.

I have a six pack and have been running for over 20 years and have never been injured. I see fatties injuring thenselves running 15mpw it is lulzy.

Regarding running aging you, there is absolutely no reason running should age you more than any other physical activty of the same intensity. All exercise is merely the conversion and metabolism of glucose and oxygen into energy for your muscles. What is unique about running is that it takes place outdoors with minimal protection from UV rays. That is what you are feebly trying to get at.

Also, don’t make ime laugh with “free radicals.” There is no science to prove what these are and whether or not it is worse for you then sitting in front of your computer jacking off.

Regarding running not feeling good, yes we are chemically programmed to prefer comfort and enjoy fatty rich foods because these werre rare until recent human history. See how long you live if you lay in bed all day eating chocolates.

Also, running, along with other high intensity aerobic exercise are great for weight loss. I used to run 10 miles a day finishing with 30 minutes of light weights and abs, and would burn approx. 1,500-2,000 calories each day. I would have to eat 3-4 Big Macs to get me net equal. For athletes maintaining your weight ican be a huge challenge because of your super high metabolism. In fact I was losing so much weight and muscle mass that I cut down on running.

Pussy.

Also agree re: free radicals and "antioxidants", doesn't seem to have a lot behind it yet.

Cyclists have a hard time adjusting to running.

Running is an impact activity and your bones need time to adapt. Yes, running makes your bones more dense and stronger.

Cycling utilizes quads more and hamstrings/calves less than running. You are sore because your hamstrings and calves are weak. You need to do uphill running and hamstring/calve exercises for a solid two months.

Running requires a balanced set of muscles. If your quads are huge they will do more and more work and your hamstrings and calves will get weaker. When your running recruits your weakened hamstrings and calves (such as increasing your pace or distance) thats where you start risking injury.

As a cyclist Inimagine your core is already decent because you cant ride on a weak core.

For sedentary land beasts, running will be absolutely miserable for your first three months or so. After this diffocult adjustment period, you can go on an exhilarating 10 mile run feeling like you are flying and feel amazing afterwards.

Of course most people give up after 3 weeks of running 3 times a day.

Trying running 6 days a week for a month and report back. These runs should not be paced. Just do 45 minutes.

Science shows that 45 minutes of high quality aerobic exercise results in something like a 450% increase in HGH production along with a massive number of other great physiological benefits. Anything over 45 minutes is mostly for energy efficiency gains, which only apply to elite runners and marathoners. Most professional runners run 3 times a day. Something like 2 45 minutes runs and a track/tempo workout for the third. The Kenyans rarely run more than 1:30 at a single go, bc the first 45 minutes are most bemeficial and anything after that is marginal gains for increased stress and injury risk.

Your body just isnt adjusted to running. Or you ran too hard. Get a heart rate monitor and never get over 165bpm for your first two months and never go over 45 minutes. Walk if you feel like it. Thank me later.

If you feel like shit you went too hard. Harder than your body is ready for.

Amateur move is to go fast bc of ego but you end up paying. Who cares if you have to jog just go out and move your feet for 45 minutes. Walk if you feel winded. The endurance and speed will come naturally, and you will feel more comfortable as your brain adjusts to the mechanics of running (its called muscle memory and yes, you need it for running).

I don't run because it's high impact and I have a genetic progressive joint disease.

Luckily for you, getting injured is totally natural and inevitable with running. You don't need to have any predispositions!

Yeah, I doubt I'd run even without the predisposition. Why fuck up your joints when you can row, cycle, etc.

I used to be a distance runner in high school and college, but overtrained for a marathon in 2009 & paid for it in 2016. The first image was of my normal, right leg. The next one showed my dislocated left knee. The remainder are self-explanatory.
