I'd worked the night before and happened to wake up fairly early. I was chatting with a couple friends on AIM and listening to Howard Stern with the TV on mute. He said something about it and I looked over at the TV to see the first tower smoking.
I ended up getting called into work that night (it was my night off). I had to take surface roads into DC because all the highways and main arteries were shut off for inbound traffic. I got in and there were National Guard doods on every street corner with Humvees parked on the sidewalk, holding machine guns.
Newsroom was a complete madhouse that night. |

It was one of those perfectly clear days when the grass is dewey and it's a bit chilly in the morning, but the air eventually warms up. I'd just left an 8 AM class and was headed across campus to another class when I ran into a friend from high school who lived in my dorm. He said his mom had just called him and that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. When I got to the next class, the professor was a little late and some people were saying that another building had been hit. The professor continued class until 10 AM and looked at his laptop before dismissing it and told us to go home because classes were cancelled for the rest of the day. I went back to my dorm and watched like 8 hours of coverage. I called family to make sure they were all OK (with shitty cell service it took several tries) and talked to people on AIM, though CNN was down for most of the day. It was just person after person being interviewed saying that they just barely escaped. And then, at night, they were interviewing people who were wandering around the site looking for relatives.
