It all goes back to Peter Jefferson, who was Thomas Jefferson's father. He was a surveyor who was best known for surveying the Allegheny Mountains for the first time.
Legend has it that one day as he was up in the mountains crossing a stream to take a leak, he came upon two Native American MUSCLESTUDS lifting heavy rocks over their heads while STIMMING a feathered proto-training-twink. He hid behind a tree to observe more closely and was amazed to see that one of the Natives was able to shoot a load all the way over a 100 foot maple tree.
He was too scared to join in, fearing being killed and scalped, but when he got back to Tuckahoe he started a new club -- the Colonial Gentleman's Athletic Club. The lifting was limited to raising heavy stones above their heads and their loads barely got 10 feet, but they quickly learned how to STIMMMMMMMM properly and even captured some young natives to act as training twinks (or as they called them, "heathen-holes").
His son joined the club in his mid-teens, and the rest was history.
