CR. Best place to go in the world for blondes is Brazil, especially the southern region. But you can certainly see plenty in Sao Paolo and Rio.

They can be oddly uptight about sex though. Like this one blond Brazilian I met in San Diego (big community there) wouldn't take me to his apartment because he was, of all things, worried about his landlord seeing him bring back someone to his place. LJFL.

eh. it can be interesting for tourism, but a lot of those places have a lot of problems. whole gigantic chunks of brazil are just shitty towns and mid-sized cities full of poverty and crooks. crime is extremely bad in certain areas, and "pretty bad" in a lot of them. theft is a common pastime even in many "better" areas. the local foods in a lot of places are downright bland. there's a sort of general indolence and gentle fatalism that suffuses a lot of those cultures.

a place like bolivia (for example) has world-class landscapes, but to get to them, you'll be dealing with standoffish locals, a shitload of hucksters and pickpockets, shitty local services, and a lot of bland starchy meals. this is kind of how things work in a lot of south america. there's a reason there are way more western expats somewhere far-afield like bangkok than relatively nearby like lima.

nonetheless, things have improved in a lot of areas. internet and really low-hanging quality-of-life stuff like flushable toilets. those are more common. modern supply chains mean that basic consumer crap is available even in many outlying villages. but unless you do something like marry a local, you probably won't be enthralled with the local culture and feel compelled to stick around for an extended time.

coastal chile is beautiful but also more remote and more expensive. a lot of places down there are really thinly-populated, and you pretty much need to rent a vehicle to get around, which adds costs. argentina used to have an expansive passenger rail system, but it shriveled up over time.

there may well be; regional officials in those countries are always cooking up schemes like that. but any sort of unsettled land in chile is going to be WAY out of the way of any significant cities. stuff down there is spread-out.

kind of. like anywhere else in south america, it always runs the risk of being swamped by economic migrants from elsewhere. that's not quite as big an issue now that bolivia and backwater peru's birth rates have fallen, but argentina was straight-up overwhelmed by wave after wave of these people, which its politicians were eager to exploit for electoral advantages. northern chile is basically southern peru, demographically, and is also kind of shitty and poor. i wouldn't expect that to overtake the country as a whole - i would hope. but if things go to shit generally, chile wouldn't be unaffected by its neighbors.

i'm not that familiar with it, other than that it seems to be getting more attention recently. and it looks like it is growing more quickly than it was. it strikes me as new zealand prior to NZ becoming trendy in the 00's.

my sense is that a lot of places in atlantic canada and non-metropolitan quebec are likely to retain their traditional demographics. a place like new brunswick is a slow-growth overlooked location despite its proximity to the northeast corridor.

they have limited appeal because they lack truly big cities and are kind of insular and cold (in terms of climate - the atlantic coast up there is foggy and breezy).

What % of the year are you traveling? Why have you thus far avoided those places, and why have you been to the places you have?

The whole ex-soviet -stans and Mongolia fascinate me for how insanely continental they are. They seem more otherworldly than just about any other inhabited place on the planet. It's probably because they're boring places but I just never see anything about them. RSF has been to a number of these places apparently and had some commentary (I made a thread awhile ago)

i don't speak russian or chinese and don't plan to take the time to learn, so that kind of limits things. i haven't spent much time in those regions. i'm not opposed to visiting as a tourist, but it's not a priority. i don't travel as much as before. i think it's probably better for me over time to establish something more enduring with a particular locality.

I'm 99% certain this will be my fate as well. Easy to build up the appeal of being an expat when it's nothing but a pipe dream. In actuality I doubt I could ever leave the comfort of the culture I've lived my whole life in. One of Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Vermont, New Hampshire etc is probably my destiny.

the thing about expatriation is that even if it's easy to LIVE in a place, it's not quite so easy to DIE there. i always remember the stories about arthur c. clarke, and how he wanted to get back to britain in the days before he died, but he was too old and sick and was stranded in sri lanka. it's not that uncommon even for latin americans to go back home when their lives are nearing the end. you can make a new life for yourself, but it takes a lot to completely shed the circumstances of your birth.

It's a sacrifice you would personally have to bear if you deemed it necessary to position your progeny in a more advantageous location for the mid to long term future. There would of course be other life disturbances. But this is like one giant exercise in delayed gratification - one so far off, you'll be dead before it comes to fruition.

Im convinced that was a plant to drum up federal spending. A huge fema exercise just happened to take place concurrently. Anyway, the scary one is the subduction (a la Indian Ocean sunami) and few pnw cities are even on the impacted costal areas. My biggest fear is un-reinforced masonry on historic buildings downtown. As a continent I'd say it's straight up shit.

What is it exactly that you'd be going to see? Very little historical. A couple temples and Machu pichu which the shrews ruined.

Most of the landscape isn't substantially different from western US. Driving around Uruguay I couldn't help but feel like I was in Oklahoma or some other US shithole I'd never intentionally visit.

Argentina has some of the worst people on earth. Yes Buenos Aires is kind of western Europe but might as well go to western Europe.

In sum, just go to New Mexico. It's the same shit

There's very little history or topographical difference from north America so nothing really worth visiting. None of the countries are successful on any other front so unless you're in the mining industry you have very little reason to visit.

i dont necessarily agree but at least i get an idea of where you are coming from now

but if you care to explain further why do you think history is the same as north america? north america was colonized by anglo saxons and south america by spain and there are enormous differences in how this process went about and the end result. even the native populations before european conquest were not that similar in culture, history etc
