Any gun guys here think it might be a good idea to ban autos and semis?

Friend at breakfast this morning
Him: You know... assault rifles are going to be banned... you know!
Me: What is an assault rifle?
Him: I'm not a gun guy, but assault rifles WILL be banned.
Me: What is an assault rifle?

It's my foreveralone genius friend that hates hunting and fishing. Smarter than my friend that was Summa at Yale.
He's actually shot my AR's with me and thought it was fun.
He's even shot my 10/22 and mini 14.
I asked him if AR's are assault rifles, he said "Obviously yes!"
I then asked him about the 10/22 and mini 14, he said those probably aren't assault rifles. I LJL'd at him.

Fully-automatic guns: incredibly hard to get a hold of, incredibly expensive, incredibly rare, and almost never used to commit crimes.
Semi-automatic guns: the majority of handguns and rifles available.
Not the same thing.

Gun owner here. I spent Saturday morning duck hunting with my Mossberg (TTT, I know, but I don't want to drag a $$$ gun through water + steel shot). I think I can speak to this.
Full autos are de-facto banned already. FFL + cost of buying one is prohibitive for most crazies.
Unfortunately, multiple AR manufacturers intentionally make their AR-15 knockoffs very convertible, and conversion kits aren't illegal. This should change. Watching the videos, it seems likely the shooter had a converted AR, but this is just speculation on my part.
Magazines should be limited. There is no good reason to have >20 rounds in a clip. People buying 100 round drum clips are looking to shoot into a crowd; the weight alone would make most guns unwieldy.
Banning semi-autos is ridiculous, though. Are you really going to take away my 5 shot 12 gauge because someone in Las Vegas did something crazy?

What do you mean by this? AR-15 lowers have a shelf to prevent installing an M16 fire control group even if you drill the third pin hole for the auto sear. You could theoretically make a lightning link, but those are very difficult to get right because they need some precises heat treating and accurate cutting on very thin strips of metal.

First off it's not a clip, but I believe you're definitely a fudd. Second, why should I not have firepower parity with police? The whole point of the second amendment is to stop government tyranny, and I think short of WMD anything should be on the table if someone will sell it to you.

First link is a competition trigger that allows bump firing, no different than just a hair trigger but with an added mode to make it safer during normal (non-bump) usage.
Second link is a bunch of drop in triggers, none of which offer full auto functionality or anything similar. One squeeze of the trigger = one bullet fired, exactly the same as your mossberg. Some of the Geissle ones are compatible with legally installed full auto parts but will only function in semi auto in a regular AR15.
I get your intentions, but you're woefully underinformed about how guns work and you should stop spraying idiocy like you're some kind of expert because you own a couple fudd guns.

It's a tradeoff, dude. Yes, your freedom to shoot a massive amount of lead w/o reloading is curtailed.
But the freedom of people who don't want to be shot in drive-bys and similar chicago thug tactics is (hopefully) enhanced.
The issue with gun violence in USA is not assault weapons; it's kids in Chicago and New Orleans who can't shoot for shit but drive down the street spraying lead. That's the problem. My solution, albeit imperfect, would limit the amount of lead an untrained gang member can send flying.

Police in other cities are also finding bigger magazines. In Washington, where gun seizures by police's gun recovery unit were up nearly 50 percent so far this year over last, police noticed more rounds being shot at scenes and signs of multiple shooters. So they began keeping statistics.
Last year, about one-third of guns recovered had high-capacity magazines. Through June of this year, nearly half had large clips.
With that kind of firepower, homicides spiked in Washington, Baltimore and more than a quarter of the largest American cities last year, pushing the nation's annual murder rate up by the largest margin in nearly 50 years. The higher pace of killing has continued in many cities this year.

No. These incidents are eclipsed by your chances of getting got by normal criminals. Fuck libs and fuck gun control.
Also, this guy probably had illegal guns anyway (it is easy to illegally make guns fully auto).

No.
Legally owned fully automatic weapons have been used in three crimes since 1934. It is overwhelmingly likely that Paddock illegally converted a semiautomatic weapon.
The feasibility of banning semiautomatic weapons, including assault rifles (a bullshit semantic distinction), in a country with more firearms than citizens is very low and likely only harms non-criminals.
