People got out of their house, away from technology, and managed enormous crowds to come together in a way that connected the city. A big part of what it meant to be FROM a place was to share the NFL connection with other local fans.
It sucks this is lost, but it was dying anyway with technology. And there was nothing inherent in the game on the field that united the people. I hope people can find more productive ways to feel rooted in their hometowns, though.
Maybe this will help spawn it. I was a yuge Bills fan as a kid and we would go to Rich Stadium and 80k people would scream their love for western NY, even as our region and economy was crumbling. It would be great to find a more productive use for 80k hardworking, hard-drinking white guys who passionately love the region. |
