Havent played it yet but the new Y's game is getting great reviews.

Tales of berseria is pretty decent but very dated environmwnts/shity dungeon design detract. It's darker and has better character development than other tales games.

Trails of cold steel series gets rave reviews. I felt like the first game dragged a LOT and was too long/boring, but then it really grabs you for the final segment and that momentum carries into the excellent second game.

Persona 5 is the most polished of the series but is overlong and wears out its welcome far before the end. Too easy, plot developments are telegraphed over and over far in advance, did not care about the character cast like I did those in P3 and P4, both of which I loved.

Those are the acclaimed recent JRPGs. Divinity is the POTUS PC RPG. If you want something with a different style/tone, poast what you value in a game. I have 25+ years worth of RPG recommendations.

Also for the truly prestigious among us, try Might and Magic 3-5

The only one I ever played was Darkside of Xeen. Apparently the game could be combined with Clouds of Xeen to create a new game but I never did it.

Those old might and magic games were fucking insane, especially with no internet hand holding you through them. You had no idea where to go or if you were on the right track, dungeons were crazy with secrets and traps that would just straight up kill ur characters (with no easy way to rez them). Eventually I somehow beat it (more like the game just ended, I had no idea I was at the end).

Also, the devs didn't give any thought to balancing the spells. You can cheese the whole game on the highest difficulty by abusing the hell out of the shield spell.

are you playing it on pc? might not be hitting dem specs. the gameplay is pretty boring compared to dark souls etc., but i don't remember it being clunky.

no, I have it on PS4. just feels like he's walking on the moon or something. I started playing this game immediately after finishing Bloodbourne which has fantastic combat/controls, so maybe that wasn't a good idea

are the souls games really that hard and miserable? i haven't played any of them, but seems like bloodborne gets pretty great reviews.

they are difficult in comparison to modern games, but no more difficult than SNES/NES games. they aren't miserable, you just have to go in expecting that you're going to die a lot. the environments don't exactly put you in a cheerful mood either

you can definitely get into bloodborne. there are some bosses that are hard as hell, but for the most part the worst is just getting a feel for the game and how the quick movement and dodging work. so i'd definitely recommend it, but don't get too disheartened if you spend a while on the first stage/bosses. dark souls 1 was the only one that stands out as miserable to me in terms of combat. fucking capra demon.

i actually liked that about the witcher. your character isn't some weightless avatar able to turn on a dime, but has inertia. they do a good job making geralt feel like a really, really agile human.

no. the story is pretty disconnected from the previous two, and the setting is much more elaborated in the third anyway. great game, but be warned it's a giant time sink. first was good and might even hold up now in terms of gameplay though, for what it's worth.

agreed, it felt the most interesting and unique in terms of combat, and didn't suffer from the skyrim everything has to be yuuuuuuge impulse.
