Jack froze in the darkness as he spotted a sentry walking along the fenceline. The sentry was a big black, like all the sentries at the re-education camps, but this particular sentry was not the one he had expected to be making rounds at this camp at this time of early morning.
A schedule or shift change, perhaps. Maybe someone had called in sick?
The intelligence report on Re-education Camp MLK 5a had been fairly thorough. He knew --from the report he had read several days ago-- the appearance and behavior of the sentry he had expected to be on duty, even down to how many minutes he would take to make his nightly rounds. Jack's hand crept slowly to the pistol holster on his hip as the sentry walked by. The spotlight from the nearby guard tower passed over the bush under which he was hiding. When the sentry rounded the far corner of the fence and disappeared behind a nearby building, Jack scurried quietly over to the fence. The fence was about 8 feet high and topped by a row of silvery concertina wire. But Jack was focused on the bottom of the fence. He took a pair of wire cutters from his jacket pocket and began snipping at the fence wire.
After cutting a small gateway into the bottom of the fence, he wiggled through to the other side, and turned back towards the bushes to wave in the rest of his team. Resistance Cell 25 of White Insurgency Brigade 12A, to be precise.
The first member of Resistance Cell 25 through the fence behind Jack was Jonesy, he of the bright red hair. Short, about 5 foot 5. But good with a knife. He always carried several knives on him at all times.
Behind Jonesy was was Vonn. Tall and blonde. The Viking of the team. Quiet. Stoic. Specialty: explosives. Escaped from a re-education camp in New York with the help of explosives secretively manufactured in the kitchen of the re-education camp.
Crawling on hands and knees behind Vonn was Caleb. The hillbilly from Kentucky. Sniper. Could nail a deer at 500 yards. Carried a rifle and two pistols. Had the typical melancholy sniper disposition.
The final man through the fence was Sam. The former leader of the team. Sam had recently been demoted in favor of Jack by General Hutchinson of White Insurgency Brigade 12A. The botched raid on Re-education Camp MLK 5f was to blame. But tonight Re-education Camp MLK 5a lay before them. And botching it was the furthest thing from Jack's mind.
Jack signaled his men to fall in line behind him, and he crept close to the building nearest the fence line. He stopped to whisper into a small bone conduction microphone hidden along the contours of his face. "Anyone headed toward us right now?"
A female voice came back in response, "No one else is moving except the sentry, and he is moving away from you."
That would be Jenny, on the radio link, watching from a vantage point in a tree about 100 feet outside the fenceline of camp MLK 5a.
