Dude could have stayed in buffalo working for some mid law firm around his friends and family, going to bills games, big yard to rake in autumn, shovel in winter and mow in summer. He probably settles down with a wide hipped white 6 who has the same cultural background as him. White babies with Bills beanies. Parents helping to babysit. House on one of the finger lakes where they go tubing every summer.
Instead he's married to a FOB gook who screams at him in chink while he bills from a garage in northern california. Why the fuck is he there? Why did these two ever meet? Why is his dad dying alone thousands of miles away? All because gc whispered in his ear when it realised he was a 98th percentile test taker and was capable to grinding out exams.
Very sad case.

There is some truth here. The big issue is parents aging - not equipped to make those decisions at age 22 (or 18 or 25) - we don't yet understand how quickly life passes.
Wife really isn't a fob, though, tbf.

The truth is that if JK's parents wanted to see him they could. Same's true of my parents. They're literally sitting at home watching cable news and cable procedurals and choose that every day over their kids. Bay area isn't cheap, but old people should have less space anyway, and if they really wanted to be close they would sell their house and find something smaller here that's short driving distance. I have friends with parents that did this, and this is exactly what my wife's parents would do if we move. But when my parents come to visit they are happy to see me for like a day, and psyched to see my kids, but by day 3 they're ready to be back at their house. They don't want to be changing diapers or witnessing every toddler meltdown, and they don't want me to make a bunch of memories of them as weaker, less virile people who are winding down. They also like, on some level, that I feel guilty and they can hold it over my head when they want to. I think if they had things set up in their ideal configuration it would be us 3 hours away so that they never had to travel to see us, and we could come visit them every other month or so, and on every holiday. But the "12 times before you die" toxicthreading on this bort is covert boomer propaganda disguised cleverly as GC bashing. Boomers want to boom.

This is utter shit. There are usually other children besides yourself - so no point in moving directly where you are. And it's hard for older people to pack up and move to a place like SF.
The ready to leave after 3 days thing is only if they have to stay with you - if you are in same town or within a couple of hours, this isn't an issue.
The holding it over your head and seeing them weaker part: Sounds like you just have relationship issues with them.

This is bad advice.
> but old people should have less space anyway,
You don't seem to have a sense of how expensive bay area is. Even a studio apartment in a decent area rents for like $2300. Here is the rate sheet for one where I lived: http://www.caprop.com/property/camille-north-apartments/more-info-2/
> they would sell their house
Sell their house which is likely paid off and step into the vagaries of bay area rental market? Are you crazy? And what happens when they run out of money?
This is just ... I mean I feel like you are retarded. You have zero financial sense. There are better ways to spend time with the grand kids. Perhaps fly down once a year and rent a corporate apartment for a year.

Oh yeah olds should just do rent a studio in the middle of Mountain View or Palo Alto and compete with all the google, apple and facebookfags for a place to rent that shows off how hard they strive. That's exactly what I meant, you pathetic moron.
They're olds. They should move somewhere cheap 1-3 hours away where they would have good quality of life. There are plenty of safe neighborhoods with nice, small houses up in Napa and the surrounding area. The schools are bad and the commute to any job in the city is terrible, but it's a great spot to retire.

weather and scenery are really the only things and scenery grows old and quickly loses utility.
Smarter people - eh, if he is at a decent sized law firm in Buffalo the people there are just as intelligent - just weren't strivers or know about the "opportunities". Join a country club or something and live in a rich neighborhood and his circle will be just as smart and a lot more normal.

LOL at this. Buffalo and cities like it are in deep, deep decline, including the law firms. "Chill" midlaw jobs are disappearing as are "chill" in house jobs. And things at the bigger regional firms are on the way down b/c they have no inroads in major US markets where all of the growth is occurring.
His kids would be in comparatively shitty schools with lazy, obese friends who will grow up to jump through tables at football games, if the team doesn't wise up and leave town by then. They'd be life-pwned if they didn't do well enough on tests to leave the region.
And he should stay all so his BOOMER parents, who were gifted the greatest bull market in history, don't want to downgrade to a smaller house in CA? JK is prioritizing his kids' life, which is a foreign concept to BOOMERs who are content to sit in their big, poorly constructed homes letting cable news wash over them as they kill themselves with whatever deep friend cuisine they eat in a place like Buffalo. Easy decision.

Lol that's already happened you fucking retard
if there were still "factory jobs" that 90% of a high school class went into, Buffalo wouldn't be the post-apocalyptic shithole it is today
people either leave for college/a job in some other city and never come back or get a job at K-Mart and stick around forever

Really interesting points ITT. A few thoughts if it matters:
1. I'm reasonably happy. The only thing that takes my heart back to Buffalo is my parents. I'm fine seeing the rest of my family once/year, and I get to see my parents about 4x/year (we also text a few times/week and facetime with grandkids every week or two). I don't know what happens as they age; maybe they (or the survivor) moves part time -- that would be my ideal, but can't plan or count on it. They have the means to do so.
2. Lots of people ITT are overrating a place like Buffalo. It's objectively shit. I get anti-GC, but I'm surprised that people are taking the other side of this. Other than family, there's no reason to live in a place like that. My kids would almost certainly leave. _All_ of my HS friends left -- every single one of them. One has moved back per LinkedIn and I haven't spoken to him in 15 years. There are 4 actual law firms there by any reasonable standard. There are so few jobs. In another thread someone described it as third-world in the sense that every job is through connections or government make-work. The poast above about the slightly-above-blue-collar jobs (and the effects of this) is correct. The city's industry at this point is call centers and Geico back-back-back office. It's really sad.
3. I have a brother in Buffalo an a sister close to it and my dad loves working (couldn't be more different from me in that regard), so my parents aren't moving any time soon. The entire rest of their family lives within 30 mins of them and they see each other often.
4. Weather is worth a lot. SV/SJ has great weather (as does Marin and the bay-side of the East Bay) -- not sure where the flame comes from that it doesn't; by people who spent a foggy weekend in SF? It's not coastal Southern California, but I'll take it over anywhere else.
5. There's a lot within 1-4 hours of the Bay Area, which is worth a lot with a toddler.
6. There is much more optimism here; the people are more interesting; the world is much bigger. This sounds faggot and there's probably a better word for what I'm trying to describe but it's true and it impacts all areas of life.

I get this argument and was pretty convinced a few years ago that moving back was the best option for us. It was very hard to line up a move for two professionals to a place like that. We tried for about 18 months -- pulled almost every family connection that we could. The best option was a mid-$100Ks senior associate job for me (they were giving me 3 years to develop a book in a place where I hadn't even lived in 15 years and had no post-HS alumni network -- i.e. up or out -- and they acted like they were doing me a huge favor) and a SPS job for my wife who wasn't excited about the move anyway.
Since then life has happened: We bought a house, her parents bought a house near us, we had a kid, wife has made some friends, I have a good job, and we've settled into life here.
As mentioned below, the only real advantage I see to Buffalo is that my parents are there, with a much much smaller advantage being extended family being close. The rest of the things--shittier CA house, no lake house, etc.--are worth in on balance.

Damn. This hits very close to home. My sister's family stayed in Buffalo, have white kids, and own a sweet lake house on Keuka Lake where they go waterskiing, tubing and just get drunk and have a great time.
I, on the other hand, went to top-25 schools (this is great for Buffalonians), married a California Asian, have short hapa kids, and live in a rundown shoebox in Southern California accumulating zero savings.

It's hard to overstate the brain drain in places like WNY. I grew up not far from there and I don't know anyone from high school who's still around.
And the weather is apocalyptically bad. I've not experienced SF weather, but I can't believe it's anywhere near as unpleasant.

i don't mind the cold. it's the shitty spring/fall that screws things up. You don't really get reliably nice weather until the end of May, sometimes.
Then things turn shitty by November. So you get very few decent months of weather.
