Eyesight is highly correlated with amount of time spent indoors as a child. it's fair to assume that what's considered 'bad eyesight' now was almost nonexistent before 'studying' and 'reading' were invented, and only astigmatism or mild myopia affected people who weren't considered 'blind'

is there evidence for your second claim about studying and reading?

None of the answers I found said that. Most involved talking about how eyesight doesn't go bad till after we reproduce. But that is WRONG. Many kids have bad eye sight. It should have been bred out as they would have died by a snake bite they couldn't see coming before reproducing.

Evidence poor eyesight wasn't common before the invention of written language? no. But time spent inside as a young child is correlated with poor eyesight - and optometrists fitting these kids with overpowered glasses every year never helps.

Link to correlation?

It just seems every other attribute we have scientists point to an evolutionary cause... but not bad eye sight

first result on google, there's pages more

Astigmatism and, presumably, the propensity for myopia is genetic, but eyes develop until after puberty.

This is the most promising answer I found have found and only one that actually makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. Love xo.

But I don't think it's complete. I'm sure kids that spend plenty of time outside become short-sighted. This should have been killed out.

Research is showing that it has something to do with exposure to hours of bright sunlight.

The eye requires the sunlight to develop properly, or it elongates out of control for some reason.

Send your kids to "outdoor kindergarten" (new thing, looks super cool) so they don't end up nerds.
