I'm friends with a military historian who has strong disagreements with VDH's scholarship which is amusing at times. |

Does he just make a lot out of the lack of regular pitched battles? The book gets cited in a bibliography I have where it notes his observation the entire 20+ years of war only had a few hours of traditional hoplite combat. The Savior-Generals was an especially strange book; he tries to make the dubious claim the Union was on the brink of losing the Civil War until Sherman showed up and turned the tide in the Atlanta Campaign. That is...a very tenuous argument. |
