Schwarzenegger actually acts in Terminator 1 and puts his physicality to work in amazing ways. He is truly robotic in 97% of his scenes. Sarah Connor's character development is really crazy too. She goes from ditzy waitress to Che Guevara in 90 minutes. 2nd half of T2 is basically unwatchable because it's just Edward Furlong hamming it up like son and dad after they reconfigure his brain. Arnold even SMILES after he picks up the minigun. Robert Patrick sucks but he actually outclassed Arnold in that film.

Also, T1 is the only movie where Arnold plays a villain. It's utter bullshit that he goes through all of T2 without killing a single fucking person. Nothing else Schwarzenegger ever did in his entire career came close to the sheer brutality and terror of this scene:

Absolutely cr. Terminator the first was almost a horror movie and Arnold was genuinely frightening. My ex gf used to remark how scared she was during the scene where he chases Sarah in the night club.

I think he does kill people in T2 though, in the mall/arcade shootout scene some bystanders get laid to waste by his shotgun.

Yeah originally Cameron was interested in making a slasher but he thought Halloween was the definitive word there. So he put his own twist on it, and it really does function like a slasher.

I find the police station shoot out absolutely terrifying. Sarah should be safe there, she's in a building filled with armed, trained men and women. But they're all cut to pieces and helpless against an unstoppable killing machine.

Oh, and the mom's voice part is chilling.

Arnold is terrifying as the bad guy and does stuff that he wouldn't ever do again once he wanted to establish himself as the good guy/hero in every film e.g.

- execute a random middle aged woman by shooting her in the head multiple times

- machinegun a crowd of random people at a disco dance

- attack a police station and murder 20+ police officers

No big star would play a bad guy who did stuff like this its just too evil. But that's what makes him such a good character.

I read somewhere about the making of T1 and it set new standards for making such a good film on a low budget. Apparently the main reason most of it takes place at night is not only for atmospherics but because it was much cheaper to shoot at night.

Agreed, and it is often the case that lower budgets lead to more creativity. Restrictions can be liberating. Once Cameron got the big budgets his stuff became sanitized.

I think the low budget sort of helps in other ways. Like, the scenes of the future war in T1 are cheesy as hell, but there's a dark minimalism to them that I think is very effective. It evokes the feeling of a desperate, grim war in a way that all the impressive effects of Terminator Salvation don't.

Its the same way that the original Star Wars looked so good because they shot the space battle scenes using models of spaceships that had realistic wear and tear on them and blue screen and not CGI. Sometimes it does look too fake (the Death Star looks too much like foam blocks in some scenes) but generally it looks more "real" than the best CGI could do for a very long time. You just have to look at the awful CGI extras that they added to the film when George Lucas tried to ruin it by making a "special edition" to see how badly they grate compared to the original special effects.

PS: and yes, Terminator Salvation was a complete nothing. The low budget scenes in T1 of the future war, in particular the scene where a terminator breaks into the human bunker and starts killing everyone are far more effective. Even the cheezy stop motion effects are better.

I agree with this. T1 is a better film than T2 because it was much more innovative and a lot more adult, grimmer and darker than T2. T2 was weak because of the annoying child and AS wanting to play the good guy.

I feel the same way about Alien v Aliens though I think Aliens is closer to Alien than T2 is to T1.

Cr. I think part of it is the aesthetic--both T1 and T2 are amazing time capsules of their eras, and there's overlap, but they have different feels and a different sense of production design

Aliens is much slicker than Alien, but it still retains a sense of the "used future" aesthetic of the first one. For example, all the toys we see that the colonist's kids has in Aliens are dingy 1980s toys. It's a tiny detail, but it brings home the idea that, even if technology has progressed to the point of space mining, pulse rifles and synthetic humans, it's still based in material realities

And to be fair to Aliens it didn't set out to be in the same SF horror genre as Alien. It was consciously made as more of a action film with lots of characters and lots of shooting rather than the slow horrible pace of Alien.

I agree about the shows being time capsules of what people at the time thought the future was going to be like. There was a huge change in the late 70s from the 60s idealised flying car squeaky clean futures (e.g. Logans Run, Lost in Space TV series) to the more gritty used and worn futures that I think Star Wars, Alien and Blade Runner are good examples of. I like Logans Run but in retrospect it looks like it was made 20 years before Alien, not three.

I also thought the creepiness of the Alien crashed ship, the eggs and the horrible Alien's physical features were new and unique.

In comparison T2 set out to be a better T1 but it certainly wasn't.

In terms of unique...have you seen the original Alien trailer? It tells you basically nothing about the movie except "it's not going to be a happy time" but it's one of the most effective ever.

the only thing is, T1 is almost like a B movie. it's really low-rent/low budget, almost to the point where it's distracting. like you're watching a TV movie or something.

it's still a classic, but T2 is just so much slicker.

But the low budget actually meant that they relied on plot and character more than T2 which was just another Hollywood special effects bonanza (though not remotely as bad as current day films). As I noted above apparently the low budget is the main reason most of the film takes place at night and its better and more scary for that.

T2 was amazingly, relentlessly paced, slick as fuck, and one of the first modern big blockbusters.

i like T1 and T2 had some cheesy moments but T2 is much grander, more epic, fully realized.

(and the franchise shoulda fucking stopped there ugh...)

first one is an all-time great sci-fi-fi thriller b-movie. but it's not necessarily a better movie. t2 was the high-water mark for action movies at that point and the rest of the 90s action fare was just attempts at recreating the shit that cameron mastered in that movie.
