meeting with big firm practice group chair for drinks after cold email

I've been in gov't work since last October and want to transition. Partner says he's happy to put my application through the official process but wants to meet informally first, maybe including a few of his colleagues.
apart from relevant work experience and cool summer work, I'm a sps candidate who graduated bottom third at my t20.
What's the best I can hope for?? |

Which it was going to anyway (you certainly didn't think that there was some backdoor "drinks with practice chair" hiring process that doesn't at any point involve LOOKING AT YOUR GRADES FROM ONE YEAR AGO), and it will for basically any job worth having at this stage in your career.
So I'd say that this is a pretty good opportunity, and if you're going to punch out of your league job-wise you better capitalize on this type of shit. Seem funny and interesting but adult-like and professional; talk like you know the area well, have an entrepreneurial bent about it, and have already committed to it. And most important, be likeable and don't be a faggot, but if you can't manage that one then I'm afraid it's public sector work for the foreseeable future for you, regardless. |

Even giving you the "factors" would be useless since you can get better info even from him -- and he's a multi-biased and self-protective source you can't even candidly ask questions to.
The "official process" is just how far short the sum of his hiring power + your creds falls from the firm's normal standards under ideal conditions. It'll at least involve looking at your grades; the real questions are (1) is he a part of the final decisionmaking; and (2) if not, does whoever is operate largely independently of his input (viewing it like judges view letters of rec) or does his rec set the tone for the presumptive decision. All this shit is so circumstance-dependent and intertwined with your merits and how much he likes you that it feels worthless typing all this shit. Just go kick ass and make that boomer feel like relevant and vibrant. |
