There are ragtag Muslim groups running around throughout the jungles of West Africa armed with the typical Soviet era weaponry (AKs, RPKs, RPGs, etc.). Not very advanced, but they have far better organizational skills, motivation, clandestine support networks, and all that jazz. See Boko Haram. They've thumped the shit out of the Nigerian army numerous times. Also, many veterans of the Syrian War have moved into these areas over the years to provide training, logistics, and other crucial services.

The majority of these West African peoples are, by US legal standards, mentally retarded (sub 70 IQs). So the average IQ of the standing armies is something like 75 at best and they're painfully incompetent and corrupt.

This is where they need U.S. supervision and babysitting in order to not get fully ran over by hordes of black Muslim headchoppers. Army Special Forces (re: Green Berets, I think two of these guys were SF, not sure about the rest) work in these types of scenarios (handful of US soldiers with a bunch of locals) and embed with local militias, police forces, military, and so on to provide support. They're there to help lead them when shit hits the fan.

Remember how we pulled out of Iraq and then ISIS invaded Iraq and literally thousands of Iraqi soldiers just dropped their weapons and ran, leaving thousands of Humvees, millions of rounds of ammo, weapons, drones, etc. behind? Yeah... that's the quality of troops these types of countries produce (diversity is our strength!).

So just try to think about this in terms of "stability" from the US perspective. Economic growth and development depends on stability. Would you rather let a bunch of maniac muslims overrun and take over a country? Or would you spend the time, money, and a few thousand soldiers to help prevent such a scenario from happening? That's ultimately what it boils down to in a lot of these shithole countries.
