An advantageous, partially for the reasons you mentioned, emergent property of increases in intelligence. Even certain low level biological entities demonstrate goal oriented behavior without our level of consciousness. Everything is in degrees, correlated to general intelligence levels, indicating that it isn't one part of the brain that results in consciousness but rather a wholistic property. E.G., we have higher levels of consciousness than apes.
