Theres basically 3 ways you can get Korean citizenship.

1 - parents are K-citizens*

2 - abandoned kid found on the street

3 - naturalization

Before the 2010 revised Nationality Law, all Koreans with dual citizenship had to renounce 1 of their citizenships before they turned 18.

My parents were both Korean citizens at the time of my birth, which meant that I was a Korean citizen from the moment I was born.

But there is a loophole:

We have a family registration system called the hojuk. If your name is not recorded in it, you can live in Korea without having to serve. You can live in Korea on the God Visa - aka the F4 visa - which is essentially a Korean Green Card - I can stay here indefinitely: I have the F4 and my name was never registered in my hojuk. The only people who qualify for the F4 are ethnic Koreans. Foreigners can't get it.

The reason why you hear horror stories of Koreans born abroad getting pressed into military service is their parents, or their grandparents, reported their birth and their names went into the hojuk system. So these poor dewds born in America come to visit Korea and then they get snatched up by the military even though they didn't even know they were Korean citizens the entire time.

I confirmed my Korean citizen status when I went to immigration to naturalize last year. The immigration officer said I was not allowed to naturalize because I was already a citizen.

I've explained this maybe a hundred times here but I'm always happy to drop some knowledge on the unenlightened.
