this is mostly because SD isn't an urban center to begin with - it's always been a collection of loosely-linked neighborhoods spread out along a 70 mile coast. downtown SD is historically an empty shithole that got "revitalized" by bland GC interests in the late 90s and early 2000s around the construction of petco park. since this is the "THAN DIEGO!!!" people get tricked into visiting when they have no idea what the city holds, the bad places drown out the good.

the exception is good mexican food, and specifically good baja food, which can be found just about everywhere in the city.

the best higher-end food, as mentioned elsewhere, is along the cove in La Jolla and in Del Mar.

Maybe there are in absolute numbers more Michelin restaurants on the East Coast, but there are tens of thousands restausrants in each of NYC and LA alone. They are basically the same - the chefs come from all over, learn the same methods and dishes and styles, and immediately replicate the success of one restaurant in a hundred other cities. There's hardly even regionally fare left anymore.

You'd have to dine at hundreds of those restaurants in both cities (and in just a couple of months given how quickly food trends are replicated and phase out) to assess whether one is categorically better than the other.

Take a decent sized town in east coast vs west coast. For ex. Nashua in New Hampshire which is just 1 hr or so from Boston. Compare that with any medium sized town in CA and it wont even be close

As for as SD: if you spend more than $60 per person on the entire meal its usually not worth it. there is literally only a handful of places that would justify fine dining and they are all in la jolla/del mar not gaslamp. SD is great for cheap and casual dining and also has pretty good sushi. If you are a tourist little italy is a much better bet for good restaurants than gaslamp. try Juniper and Ivy or Prepkitchen for modern american food.
