Like some guy said in the rust thread "good luck finding a good rust developer"

If you become proficient in an underutilized/niche language, might be easier to stand out even if the overall number of opportunities are lower

Tempted to do this with Julia or something but the effort is probably better used getting better at R or python

It doesn't have to be "high" demand, just high enough that there are jobs available and it's a small enough field that you can fairly easily stand out

Rust, Julia, OCaml come to mind

There really aren’t any jobs in rust. What you should do is learn competitive programming and become an elite level developer. Then you will always be employable, no matter where tech goes, and can charge crazy freelance rates

I hate this question so much. once you understand the concepts of CS, it doesn't really matter what language you're 'proficient' in. In OOP it is just a matter of syntax, and with procedural langs and other odd ducks you just fill in the gaps when you can.

All of these "languages" look exactly the same to me. They're more like dialects.

that's fair and undoubtedly the computer scientist major's way of looking at it. I came into using programming languages as a tool for other work so the concepts of CS aren't really firmly established for me. I keep meaning to take a mooc on intro to CS and algorithms but who has the time man

I don't even know what a procedural vs OOP language looks like, I guess I can only conceive of OOP languages since that's all I've used

One day when you find the willpower to stop jacking off to porn and poasting, hit up that link and really learn the shit. Then dive into a tutorial on C or JavaScript. That will get you further than any boot camp fag. This shit can even be fun sometimes.

you have it backwards

people who are highly proficient in niche areas are generally the cs ubermenschen to begin with. when a company is looking for an erlang developer or whatever it comes with the implicit assumption that they are pretty experienced in general with development as they will need fairly deep technical knowledge
