Adi Tatarko, co-founder and CEO of home design and decorating site Houzz, dropped a stat that hits home for many people: 12% of couples consider divorce when remodeling or renovating their home.

"We started running surveys in the early days and got feedback from our community, and that was so prominent. And 12% did say, we did consider a divorce during that process," said Tararko, speaking at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Next Gen Summit in Laguna Niguel, California on Monday.

We’ve done 2 major renovations now (one with me 7-9 months pregnant and with newborn). I was basically at Home Depot every weekend. Never considered divorce but there were some nasty arguments mainly my asking him to do stuff. I did 90% of the work because he simply didn’t have an opinion on anything.

Nah we don’t have the budget for high end shit. I remember stuff like certain lo flow toilets qualified for a state rebate of like $200 and I was mad as hell that my husband bought the wrong Kohler toilet or whatever and made him return it and he’s like “do we really need $200 rebate?” Yeah, cuz Im a cheap motherfucker and I’m 2 weeks overdue so you go return that toilet. Also if you add up the costs for everything, you realize you don’t want to buy $30 cabinet pulls when you have to buy like 30 of them. So you get $5 ones from Home Depot.

We did have a contractor but a contractor does not physically go and pick out and buy all the fixtures for you, stuff like sinks and faucets etc. you need to hire a designer to do that shit and I’m too cheap to do that. my husband is actually quite handy due to his father, and does a lot of fixes around the house. he is just lazy.

“Hey honey what sort of kitchen sink should we get?”

“I don’t know, whatever.”

I spend an hour looking online at various sinks in different shapes and sizes and materials and price points.

I settle on a model and the price shop for another hour to find the lowest price for the sink because often internet dealers have cheaper prices or you can at least save on sales tax.

Repeat 50 times for every single item from the flooring to tiles to bathtubs. And with stuff like floors and tiles, you often to have to go to multiple stores located in far off locations requiring long drives. I did 90% of this by myself while pregnant.

but is he the type to really care? are you?

if you told him to pick the sink, just take care of it and get one at a good price, would you be comfortable with his decision, or would you micromanage the process while he spent a bunch of time spinning his wheels and ultimately you'd end up making the decision anyway?

This.

If her husband would come back with any plausible faucet and she would be fine with it then she is absolutely right to get pissed at him for not taking initiative. But more likely than not her husband knows that even if he puts in a good faith effort to independently get a faucet, she will yell at him that it is not exactly what she wants and that he should return it.

Generally if one partner is totally ambivalent about something and the other is particular, the latter should champion the process entirely and only expect the former to help in the most rudimentary ways possible (i.e. help me lift this box into the van).

she could have even given a few parameters, like "i like this kind of style and i like polished nickel, find a few good ones for good prices and we can pick from that group"

I do care greatly about tiles, counters and floors so those things I was fine doing myself. But lol at caring about the style of the faucets for the bathroom in the guest house or the 5th set of towel bars or 3rd toilet and endless other things you have to purchase.

I had to coordinate and manage the whole process and keep track of what we needed and occasionally give him one off items to buy and give complete instructions and not leave any detail out. For example with the lo flow toilet, I told him there was a state website that listed the brands and models that qualify for the rebate (there are like 1000 choices) and somehow he fucked that up.

He also didn’t know that the rough in plumbing was done for moen shower fixtures because I bought moen sink faucets and I told him we need a nickel finish rain shower head and he bought a delta one. Yes it’s my fault for not telling him that it has to be moen but it’s the fact that I know every single detail and he doesn’t know anything and needed to be delegated specific tasks with exact instructions that became frustrating. So I just did everything myself.

Thank god we are done with renovations until attic insulation time down the road.

Reading comp pwned? I don’t give a shit about moen v delta, but the plumbing was done for moen after I randomly selected a bunch of moen shit so a delta shower head cannot be installed. I knew the rough in plumbing was all done for moen fixtures and figured he knew given the giant boxes of moen shit lying around all over the bathroom but he had no clue.

From the 10 boxes of moen stuff lying around both bathrooms, one of which we continued to use throughout renovations. Or maybe he should just ask “does it have to a certain brand?” when out of the 30 things I was doing that day while being pregnant and working full time I told him “hey can you buy a rain shower head?” and expect it to be done correctly? somehow it’s on me to give every single instruction and he’s not an adult who can also ask questions of me? And how did I know that the rough in plumbing was already done? Because I’m talking to the contractor every days, 20 times a day. Why can’t he talk to them and know about the status. Why is it on me. Anyway, this was shit we fought about. It was just a stressful period but all done now.

My husband is great but attention to detail is not his thing.

She's wrong. For instance, it matters whether the sink faucet is a 4" centerset or an 8" widespread, but tons of different brands will work with those standard configurations. And so it goes for everything else.

I’m not talking about faucet types across brands, I’m talking about the shower. The rough in plumbing for the shower varies across brands. You can have a 4” centerset faucet from all different brands.

Edit: it’s the rough in valve and trim for the shower that varies across brands.

I unfortunately know more about the nitty gritty details about home renovations than I ever wanted to know. I have all sorts of random knowledge like about PEI tile ratings and difference btwn sanded and unsanded grout and different styles of bevel edges for countertops. These are all details I didn’t care to know about but somehow got stuck with when the contractor would ask “what do you want.”

Keep in mind I was heavily pregnant, I worked until I was 42 weeks, was running the renovation the whole time and when I gave birth we were still living in the middle of a disaster zone and I was taking care of a newborn. He should’ve taken a lot of the burden off of me during that time and that I only blew up at him 3-4 times during that period is a minor miracle. Very few women can do what I do and keep it together the way I can and that’s why he married me.

My Wife almost murdered me when we had to repair and remodel a large part of the home when Hurricane Matthew lit us up.

I will not attempt any sort of home remodel while I am married solely because my Wife will be such a pain in the ass that it is simply not worth the bump in equity.

Hmmm, where do I start. Finding a contractor, the contractor not calling back, workmen not showing up on time. Oh, and my favorite - we have to go pick out flooring/ fixtures/ colors, which is just me entertaining our 2 year old while she stares at things endlessly and can't make up her mind. Also, it's really fun when your Wife finds something that is needlessly expensive, you point out that we have a budget, and that leads to tears. The best though: the regular breakdowns about why isn't the job done yet, why am I not taking this seriously.

Terrible. I'll never do that again.

true, but also because they have no taste, spending money on an interior designer/decorator would make no discernible difference to them. it's sad.
