I'm in a specialized tranny field that offers limited inhouse opportunities and I've lateralled three times in 5ish years with my last move being just under three years ago. No chance at partner and will likely be pushed out in my 8th of 9th year. Fucking hate law but really can't think of another field/role I could transition into. And I haven't saved nearly enough where I can afford to take a gigantic paycut. How fucked am I?

Wow good luck man. I think you'll pick up that stuff pretty quickly. I actually started in restructuring before moving to LevFin thinking LevFin would offer much better exit options - which it apparently doesn't. Anyway if you could handle restructuring at that level for that long I'm sure you'll pick up the state court crap quickly.

Are you willing to move markets? I've seen bros make moves into other tranny fields by going to a less desired market. Just make up some tie to the city -- family, friends, wife has family there, etc. Are you in a regulatory heavy field?

I'd start mass mailing for some higher-up positions in less desirable markets. You have no idea how hard it is sometimes for like US Bank to fill a spot because they're getting resumes from local Milwaukee kids (or like P&G in Cincy). You can probably ask for make-me-move money, and you may get it.

Your unwillingness to move, inability to take a paycut or do something risky suggests that your only path is to keep doing the lateral dance for another couple of decades. You will celebrate your 40th, 50th and 60th birthdays as a nameless of counsel at a mid tier law firm, working to enrich more daring men then you.

I mean I look for other jobs constantly when I'm not billing 50-70 hours a week and have at least tried to think creatively about other things I can do. It's not that easy to pick a family up and move though. My wife has a job too etc and obviously I'd like to avoid going that route unless it's forced on me. Why would I jump on that right off the bat?

I have thought about lateralling again. It obviously offers a short term fix while further fucking me in the long term. Basically situation is a product of me dancing between rain drops after ITE and I think it's all finally catching up with me. Incredibly jealous of my friends who just took a sales job out of college and are now making around what I make and are 100% comfortable in their careers.

if your wife works and you dont have debt, you should be able to take somewhat of a paycut. ask yourself if you care more about seeing your children grow up, picking up some hobbies etc.

if so, downsize your life and move out of MFH to a cheaper suburb and aggressively look for a painfully boring but stable $200K job at a bank.

I'm sure it comes with a lot of stress. I just happen to know a bunch who are doing great and seem much happier than any lawyer other than s rainmaker thatci've ever met. And yeah I definitely have heard of some getting thrown out on their ass if they don't perform but they always seem to get a job immediately at one of the shitload of positions that always seems to be available. They don't have to deal with the whole weirdo law issue where your employer will never admit to pushing you out because of their shitty pyramid structure.

You always have options, but if you're only willing to search indeed.com for jobs that pay 200k+, it's never going to happen. What do you actually want to do outside of a law firm?

Also, talk to recruiters about moving to a different practice area. Probably tough since you've lateraled 3x already, but far from inconceivable that someone would let you start over as a 3rd year doing something else.

Thanks - that's helpful. As far as what I want to do outside of law, I think I could be pretty flexible. Having the opportunity to do something other than this terrible, shitty profession would make me happy at least for a little while and I think I could potentially energize me to the point where j may even be successful at it.

Interesting idea about moving practice groups. Would love to get into tech tranny, health tranny ior investment management because that is apparently where all of the inhouse jobs are. Would be tough as you said though getting a firm to bite on a 7th year though tire tooling unless they were extremely desperate.

Right. No one is taking you as a 7th year. You would have to find a firm that would let you drop back and be a 3rd year associate. Some firms allow it, some don't. Best bet is a hot practice area that is somewhat related to what you do. Don't know what that is, but recruiters will. Talk to at least 3-4 of them; some will say it's not possible, but it does happen, so find someone who will work with you.

And if you want to get out of law, the whole "law sucks, I just want out" attitude is insufficiently specific. Guess what, most jobs suck worse than biglaw associate and pay less. You need to evaluate what you want in a job, what your realistic strengths are and decide on something, whether it's sales, biz dev, tech, etc. And then come up with a plan to get there because it'll probably take a year to make it happen.

Yeah I agree with all of that. At this point though j don't think I have the luxury of pursuing what I ideally want to do but instead need to focus on finding something that I think I would like more/be better at that is actually attainable. I mean I can't go get my MBA and start fresh on the business side or anything like that. Thinking more of something like sales. Could probably get in through a legal headhunting gig of something and then I'd at least have made a fresh break from being a lawyer.

I'd just think about whether you really want to do sales. Pretty unlikely, although not impossible, that it pays more than what you make now. My only point is that a lot of people think "oh, I made it, I'm not in law," but give too little thought to what they're actually doing and end up in something far shittier and lower paying. Most jobs fucking suck, including sales.

I don't think I have enough saved where taking a $50k job would be prudent unless there was decent odds I could grow that job into something where I could make a reasonable amount of money. And yeah I don't want to do law but am not sure of what if anything else I can do where someone will pay me a reasonable salary.

move somewhere cheap as fuck, buy a 300k house and invest the remaining 700k. then find some low paying jobs. i don't see what the issue is here.

you will likely net out with a higher net worth investing that 700k in the market than you would keeping it in your house as equity

I know a lot of levfin folks who have gone in-house, and it doesn't seem like it's all that hard. There are also periodically new firms trying to enter the practice area and it seems like you should at least be able to manage to get a counsel role if not actually lateraling into partnership.

I liked it more than M&A, ECM and investment grade debt, which really felt a lot more like I was just papering a deal that someone else was making and that nothing I did really mattered.

Obviously nothing I do still really matters, but I spend a decent amount of time either trying to find loopholes in covenants or drafting covenants to prevent loopholes, which I find kind of fun, and sometimes you feel like you are actually being a little bit creative and allowing some transaction to happen that otherwise wouldn't. I mean, most of it is still pretty boring but most of every job is really boring so if you find 5-10% of your day interesting I think you are doing pretty well.

I think I probably would have liked a lot of things though, including a bunch of other practice areas. Levfin was what I fell into because it seemed the most interesting a few years ago when I had the ability to pick, and I've stuck with it ever since.

I honestly think I would get more out of my time on earth that way. The partners in my group are either completely soul crushed to the point they have no life in their eyes, aspie as hell, sociopaths or some combination of all 3. You've gotta be fucking crazy to live like this forever. We're all either going flat out on fraud that seemingly come out of nowhere, chained to our desks, cranking through docs straight through the night, weekends, holidays, kids' birthday parties, or we're pacing around panic stricken that the work stream is slowing down and oh fuck what if the economy is about to tank and we won't have any deals to do and then we'll all - other than the rainmakers - be out on the street. It is an absolute waste of human life and I regret that I've already wasted 7 years doing it.
